33. Now these three kingdoms were in Adam, and also out of Adam, and there was in the essences a powerful combat: all attracted in Adam, and out of Adam, and would have Adam; for it was a great sovereign, proceeded from all the powers of nature. The heart of God would have him in paradise, and dwell in him; for it said: It is my image and my resemblance. The kingdom of anger would also have him, and it said: He is mine, and he is proceeded from my fountain, or from the eternal soul of the darkness; I will be in him, and he must live in my power; in effect he is born of me; I will show by him my force and my great power. The kingdom of this world said: He is mine, for he bears my image, and he lives in me and I in him; he owes me obedience, I will subject him and contain him; I have all my members in him, and he has his in me. I am greater than he, and he must be my steward; I will show in him my magnificences, my marvels and my power; he must manifest my force and my prodigies; he must keep and tend my flocks [or my regions ]: I will clothe him with my magnificent majesty; as this is clearly before the eyes.
34. But when the kingdom of harshness, of anger, of death and of hell saw that it had

the worse, and that it could not retain man, it said: I am the death and a worm, and my force is in him; I will break him and pulverise him; his spirit must live in me; and although thou, world, regardest him as being thine, since he bears thy image, nevertheless his spirit is of me, and begotten of my kingdom; that is why take of him what is thine, I will keep what is mine.
35. Now, what has the power in Adam done in this combat? It has played the hypocrite with all the three; it has said to the heart of God: I will dwell in paradise and thou must dwell in me: I will be thine, thou art my creator, and thou hast thus extracted and formed me of all the three principles. Thy charms are delicious, thou art my spouse, I have received of thy plenitude; that is why I am with child, and I will beget me a virgin, so that my kingdom become great, and that thou have in me a true joy 3 I will eat of thy fruit, and my spirit must eat of thy power, and thy name in me must be Emmanuel, God with us.
Z&, And when the spirit of this world perceived that, it said: Why wilt thou eat only of what thou canst not seize, and drink only of what thou canst not feel? art thou then not a spirit? Thou holdest of me, in thee, all the species of apprehensibilities. See, the seizable fruit is sweet and good; and the seizable drink is strong and powerful; drink and eat of me, then thou wilt obtain all my force and my beauty, thou wilt be able to be powerful in me over
Ofl. II. ( 187 )
all the creatures. The kingdom of this world will be thine in property, and thou wilt be a sovereign upon the earth.
37. And the force in Adam, said: I am established upon the earth, and I dwell in the world, and the world is mine, I will use it according to my liking. Then, the commandment of God (of the eternal circle of the life, and compressed in the centre of God) came and said: The day whereon thou shalt eat of the terrestrial fruit, thou shalt die the death. This commandment was conceived in the eternal father; there it originises in the centre whence the eternal father begets without ceasing his heart, or his son from all eternity.
38. Now 5 when the worm of the darkness saw the commandment of God, it said within itself: Wilt thou furnish nothing here? Thou art spirit destitute of body, whilst Adam is corporised; thou hast in him but the third part, besides the commandment is launched: thou shalt glide among the essences; thou shalt dissemble with the spirit of this world; thou shalt take upon thee the form of a creature, and thou shalt send into this world, some one of my kingdom clothed in the form of a serpent; thou shalt persuade Adam to eat of the terrestrial fruit, and at once the commandment shall break his body, and the spirit shall remain mine. Upon that, the envoy or the demon was all disposed, principally, because Adam occupied his place in paradise, there where he was to be; and he said within himself: Now, thou hast wherewith to avenge thyself; thou shalt mingle the lie and the truth one with the other, so that Adam discern them not, and thou shalt tempt him.

CH. IX.
Of the tree of the knowledge of good and of evil.
89. I have said it above: That the tree was proceeded from the power of the water, that is to say, that it was proceeded from the earth, and had had in itself entirely the nature of the earth, as still to-day all the trees are terrestrial, and not otherwise, neither better, nor worse 5 in them exists the corruption, just as the earth is perishable, and shall pass at the end; then all shall go away into its Ether, and there shall remain of it but the figure. Now then, such has been the tree that existed in the midst of the garden in Eden, and by which Adam was to be tempted in all the essences. For, the spirit of Adam was to rule powerfully over all the essences, as are the holy angels and God himself.
