16. For, as God the father comprehends in his own essence all the three principles, and is himself the essence of all the essences, in which are comprehended the joy and the suffering, and as he goes out however in himself from the source of the anguish, and as he renders in himself the kingdom of joy incomprehensible to the sadness, and the source of the anger in the anguish equally incomprehensible, and as he begets to himself his heart in the love, whence afterwards the name of God originises itself; likewise also the human affective base has in itself all the three principles. The soul is bound in them as in the alliance of the life. It must anew enter into itself; draw a will in the life of JesusChrist 5 tend after it; desire it with a firm resolution; not remain purely in the historical or in the science, so that one may speak of it and that one regards the words and the terms as rendering a christian person, whilst the soul is in Babel, in a pure doubt. No, that is not the regeneration; but it must be sincere
( 392 ) The affective base must go out in itself in the humility before God, and walk in the will of God, that is to say, in the justice and the truth, and in the love.
. 17. And even though the soul could not attain to it by its own force ( since it is imprisoned by the spirit of this world ), it has however the resolution in its power; God is present to this resolution; he takes it into his love, and he sows therein, the grain of the love in his power; and thence the new man grows in the life of JesusChrist.
18. That is why that depends upon a firm resolution, which one calls the true penitence: for the adoption of the word of God in the obedience of the love, grows not in the terrestrial life, but in the regenerated life, in the life of Jesus-Christ.
19. That is why the kingdom of the heaven is a gift of the grace for him who desires it ardently. One must not say in oneself: I have a will to give myself sincerely to God; but I have still need of this world for a time, then I shall abandon myself in the obedience of God. One waits thus from one time to another, and from one day to another 5 and in waiting the man of the wickedness grows. Or even, thou deferrest until the end, and thou wilt then that there be a celestial new-birth, whilst thou hast pushed 5 all the time of the life, in the anger of God, in the infernal abyss: no, that is an error; thou abusest thyself.
20. The priest, in Babel, has afterwards no
key to open thee the kingdom of the heaven; thou must thyself enter and regenerate thyself, otherwise there is no remedy either in the heaven, or in this world. Here, in this time, thou art in the field and thou art a plant; but, when the death comes and cuts the trunk, thou art no more a plant; but a fruit which has pushed. If then thou art not a mess for God, thou belongest no more to the table of God, and God dwells not in thee.
ai. For, we know that God alone is the powerful virtue for the regeneration; that if thou desirest it with ardour and a great constancy, it sows itself in thy affective base and in thy soul, whence afterwards the new man grows in the life of Jesus- Christ, so that the terrestrial is no more thus than suspended to him in this world.
22. Thus, the new man is in God in the life of the Christ; and the ancient is in this world; whereof Saint-Paul says clearly, in his epistle to the Romans, that what we live thus in the new birth, we live it in God, and that in the old man we are in this world. There afterwards also the source of the eternal alliance transmutes itself in the soul, and the soul enters into itself in the life of the Christ, in the holy and pure element, which, in my second book, I call, in some places, the holy ternary.
23. Not according to the sense of the latin tongue, but according to the intelligence of the divine nature, by means of which words, the life of Jesus-Christ, in God the father, is excellently pronounced,
(594)
as 9 in effect, its own character and the spirits in the syllables designate it; and where one comprehends perfectly, in the interior, the generation of the divinity.
14. Although that be hidden from the historical men of the schools of this world, that is nevertheless very comprehensible to the man enlightened of God, who comprehends also, consequently, the source of the spirit in the letter; which must yet be left to repose here for a time, and nevertheless that shall show itself to the intelligence.
