essences hold still strongly to the anger of God: the source of its great sins torments it, the thread of faith in the new regeneration is truly feeble. One can then enter into God only by the gates of the abyss, by the sufferings and the death of Christ, by the kingdom of hell; and hell has still a great bond about the soul 5 the falseness is not yet washed.

45. Then the bridegroom says: Come. But the poor soul answers: I cannot, my lamp is not yet accommodated. Nevertheless it holds the saviour by a thread, and it puts its imagination, by the thread of faith and of confidence, into the heart of God; there, at the end however it is delivered from the putrefac

tion by the suffering of Christ.

46. But this putrefaction through which it passes,

my soul desires not at all to share with it, for its abominable sins are kindled in the anger of God, where the poor soul must bathe itself, until it come to repose, by this little faith that it possesses. There, its glorification will not be like in eternity to that of the ^^^-^^^ ^^f *^- xnent rebegotten. Although it be indeed delivered from hell, and enjoy the celestial joy, nevertheless the greatest joy is in the true rebirth, in which rise paradise, power and the marvels.

47 Now, thy human pomp, thy domination, thy beauty, and thy riches will not elevate thee before God, as thou presumest, no more than thy employment here below, be it that of king, be it that of

priest; thou must be begotten anew in the saviour, if thou wilt be beautiful in heaven. Thou must conduct thy people to justice, if thou wilt by thy employment shine before God like the brightness of heaven, and thy works will follow thee. O! man, reflect upon thyself in this.

48. But what must I write of thee, terrestrial Babel? I must likewise show thee the principle, so that thy hypocrisy may be brought to the day, and that the demon may not remain thus under the form of an angel, and that he may not be thus for man, a God in the covetous reign of this world, as that is in effect his greatest task.

49. See; thou namest thyself a christian, and thou boastest of being a child of God? In truth, thou confessest it with the mouth, but thy heart is a murderer and a thief. Thou tendest only to worldly honours and to riches: as to the manner in which thou canst procure them for thyself, thy conscience informs itself not of it. Thou hast indeed for a moment the will to enter into the true penitence, but the demon stops thee, so that thou canst not. Thou sayest: To-morrow, and that continues always. Thou sayest besides: If I had my casket full, I could, after that, give some of it to the good man, provided that beforehand I had enough of it not to want myself afterward; thou continuest that unto thy end; now the demon paints it to thee still far off.

50. At the same time, thou consumest the sweat and the blood of the poor, and thou gatherest his misery and his lamentations into thy soul 3 thou takest from him his sweat |

t 120 y ^ CH. 19.

thou sustainest thereby thy pride, and thou wouldst that thy conduct be regarded as holy 5 thou scandalisest the poor: he becomes wicked by thy example and by thy works, and he does that which is not just before God; he curses thee, he loses himself also thereby, and abomination is begotten of abomination: but thou art the first cause of it, and even though thou shouldst not yet show thyself under this attire, and with such wisdom, nevertheless the instigator is always before thee, and thou art the root of all the sins.

5i. Even though thou shouldst pray, thy habit is not clean; it is soiled by true calumnies, by usury, cupidity, arrogance, impudicity, luxury, anger, jealousy, theft. Thou art murderer, envious, wicked. Thou criest to God that he must hear thee, and thou wilt nevertheless not take off this garment. Believest thou that a like prevaricator enters into God; that God lets enter into himself so gross a demon? Thy affective base is in the figure of a serpent, or of a wolf, or of a lion, of a dragon, or of a toad; and when thou struttest so elegantly adorned, it is much, if thou art but a subtle fox. Such as is the source and the will of thy heart, such also is thy figure; and thy soul has a like form. Believest thou that such a beast will be introduced by thee into the kingdom of God?

5a. Where is thy image according to God? hast thou not made of it a horrible reptile, and an animal? Oh! thou shalt not belong at all to the kingdom of God, unless thou be degenerated, so that thy soul shine in the image of God; for then 1^the mercy of God

is upon thee, and the sufferings of Jesus-Christ cover all thy sins.
