38. Ecoute , toi, détracteur antichrétien, ce n'est pas assez que tu sois là et que tu dises : J'ai la vraie base de la cx)nnoissance quimèneau royaume du ciel j'aitrouvélavraie religion; ni que tu juges quiconque n a pas ta connoissance ou qui n'adhère point à tes opinions. Tu dis qu'il est un hérétique et un démon ; et tu es un animal dévorant. Par fa colère" lu ne fais qu'égarer le troupeau , et tu le rends médisant , de façon qu'il maudit ceux qui ne connoissent ni lui ni toi, comme firent les Ephésiens à Saint- Paul. Crois-tu que tu aies chassé le loup par ^^ 0«»i 3 chacun veut dévorer O ! aveugla t, I;

34. Thou prayest before God; but in thy animal spirit. It is the spirit of this world and not God, who receives thy prayer 5 for thy heart is a devourer, and it insinuates itself into the devourer. Thou desirest not sincerely to enter into God, but only historically, with a hypocritical mouth, and thy heart attaches itself ardently only to the spirit of this world. Thou desirest only the temporal goods and honours, with power and authority in this world, by which thou drawest to thee the region of
this world.
35. Thou oppressest quite the wretched one, thou subjugatest him by necessities; thou paralysest all his faculties 5 so that he may follow thy beast, and may be in ecstasy before thee: also is he a servant of the antichrist. Thy beast upon which thou mountest, is thy power and thy authority that thou usurpest for thyself alone.
Thou fillest thyself with the tears of the miserable,
whose sighs pierce through the gates of the depth even to God, and by their strong pressure, they move the anger of God in thy beast, as the blood of Abel moved it in Cain. [ I have retrenched here some declamations. ]
36. It is thus that thou comest borne upon thy insensate mount; that thou marchest before the gate of heaven; that thou desirest amendment; and thou art in thy figure a devouring animal. What will Saint-Peter say thereupon? believest thou that he will give thee the key of the kingdom of heaven? O 1 no, he has none for the wolves, he has only one for himself 5 he has never had any to lend.
37. Wilt thou enter into heaven? Thou must strip thyself of thy form of wolf, and clothe thyself with the skin of a lamb 5 not at all with hypocrisy, in a corner, in a cloister or in a desert; but sincerely, in the new rebirth. Thy light must shine in justice and mercy, against the kingdom of the demon, and destroy his den by good works toward the oppressed.
38. Hear, thou, antichristian detractor, it is not enough that thou be there and that thou say: I have the true base of the knowledge which leads to the kingdom of heaven; I have found the true religion; nor that thou judge whosoever has not thy knowledge or who adheres not to thy opinions. Thou sayest that he is a heretic and a demon; and thou art a devouring animal. By thy anger thou dost but stray the flock, and thou renderest it slanderous, so that it curses those who know neither him nor thee, as the Ephesians did to Saint-Paul. Believest thou that thou hast chased the wolf by ^^ 0«»i 3 each will devour. O! blind

Babel, it is not therein that the kingdom of Christ places itself 5 but rather the calumniating antichristian reign in the Babel of confusion. [ I have thought I might still suppress here some declamations. ]
39. But what remains to be said? is it not thus that the demon acts? When one begins to torment his kingdom in one place, then he blows the tempest in all the other places. Among the children of God, he excites the spirit of censure; and in the animal-men of the world, the demon blows a true derision all honeyed; for they have the kingdom of Christ in history, and the kingdom of the demon in property.
40. What serves thee thy science, thou, antichrist, and that thou knowest how to speak of the kingdom of heaven, of the passion and of the death of Christ, and of the new regeneration in Christ, if thou art destitute of it, and if thou art only in the historical? will not thy science be a witness against thee, and which shall judge thee? or wilt thou say that thou art not the antichrist in Babel? Thou art certainly the hypocrite; thou fattenest thy beast more and more, and thou art the devourer in the revelation of Jesus-Christ. It is not only in one city that thou dwellest; but thou hast possessed the extent of the earth: I have seen thee in the spirit, that is why I write of thee, thou, marvel of the world, of heaven and of hell.
41. Thus this reign took its commencement with Cain, and holds its foundation from the demon who is a detractor of the divinity; for the demon desires only the strong and powerful ascension in his
own authority upon the thrones of heaven; but he cannot reach thereto: that is why he is so furious; his source is in anguish, not at all for generation, but for the torment of fire.
