The death and the corruption were in the body; and there was nothing in them but a pure enmity against themselves: which proceeded from the essences of the gross stars, where one source goes against the other, and where the one breaks the other, producing in the body a great martyrdom and great torments, besides the terror and the fright, and finally the destruction and the death, as this is under our eyes.

64. There, the demon gained the game, for the kingdom of this world became anew his: he had obtained an entrance into man, and could reach into the essences of his soul; in effect they were both now in one same reign.

65. He said to himself: Now the kingdom of this world is thine; thou canst, according to thy power, play with the image-man who was to occupy thy seat; his spirit is in thy domination. And he insulted God, saying in his affective base: Where is now thy noble image, that thou hast created to be seated upon my throne? Am I not the dominator of the great power of the fire? I will reign upon thy throne; mine is the force and the power; I will raise myself above the thrones of the power, and the force of no one will be able to resist me.

66. Yes, in truth, he raises himself above the thrones, but he cannot enter into the thrones. He walks in the first, and eternal origin of the astringent, tenebrous, hard, cold, rude and warm source of fire 5 but he cannot enter into the

gates broken of the profundity, in the light before God; only he raises himself eternally in his abyss, in the choleric infernal torment, and attains nothing else: that is why he is a prince; but in the bottomless extract, which has been known enough to man after his sad fall.

67. As I might well not be understood by the reader, in that I write that man dwells in the infernal abyss with the demons, I will show him the aim, so that he may feel it and seize it, if nevertheless he will not turn his eyes from it, whilst it is given him to know it, for then that will be a witness against him.

68. It is not in vain that the Christ names the demon a prince of this world; for he is such in effect, according to the first principle, according to the kingdom of the anger, and he remains such in eternity. But he is not such according to the kingdom of the four elements and of the stars. If he had there a full power, there would be no vegetation, nor any creature upon the earth. He cannot interfere in the operation of the four elements, for he is in the original, and there is a principle between. Only when, in the tempests, the stars awaken in the elements the anger of the fire, there then he is the master, the juggler, and he rejoices himself, although he have there no power, unless that be given him by the anger of God; for he is the executioner, and he executes the justice, in quality of servant, not as judge, but as executor of the high works.

( 28 ) CH. 17.

69. He is the executioner in this world; the stars are the council and God is the king of the country. Every being that separates itself from God falls into the council of the stars; they draw many people to kill themselves, some by the sword, others in hanging themselves, others in drowning themselves. There the demon is in action; he is the conductor and the executor.

70. Thus man is fallen into a great misery, and he is entirely plunged according to his body, into the kingdom of the stars and of the elements; what they make of him, that is what he is, and that substantially. They make the one great, the other little, the one straight, the other crooked; they give to the one the happiness and the riches, to the other the misery; they make of the one a subtle and spiritual man according to the kingdom of this world, and of the other a fool; they make the one king, and abase the other; they kill the one, they beget the other; they conduct, at all times, the affective base of men, but solely into the fatigues, the pains and the disgusts.

71. Besides, the kingdom of hell and of the anger pursues always the soul, and opens its maw to swallow the poor prisoner who is bound with two heavy chains, the one of the kingdom of hell, the other of the kingdom of this world; and she is conducted by the ponderous, heavy, bestial and very gangrened body, as a thief that one leads always to the place of execution, and who obtains always a delay by a petition, and is put back into prison 5 and the poor soul must dwell thus in captivity during all the time of its body.
