rich man to enter into the kingdom of the heavens, since the pomp, the pride and the pleasure of the flesh please him so much, and that the noble affective base remains dead to the kingdom of God, and in the eternal darknesses. For in the affective base is the image of the spirit of the soul, and there where the affective base inclines and gives itself, there its spirit of soul is interiorly figured by the eternal fiat.

5o. Now if it happen that without being regenerated, the spirit of the soul remain in its first principle which it has inherited of eternity by the ascension of its life, then at the breaking of its body, its soul manifests eternally a creature like to what has been in this life its constant will.

5i. If thou hast had a biting soul and that thou hast made thyself agreeable to no one in anything, such as is a dog about a bone that it cannot nevertheless eat itself, then will appear that same affection of a mastiff: the worm of thy soul will be figured according to that same source; it will retain a like will during eternity in the first principle, and there is no recall. All thy cupid, wicked, proud works will shine in thy source, in thy own tincture of the worm of the soul, and will live there eternally; thou wilt be able neither to attain nor to seize any will for the amendment, but thou wilt be eternally the enemy of God, and of all the

holy souls.

52. For the gates of the profundity of the light of God will shine no more for thee, seeing that thou art then a complete creature in the first prin

ciple. If thou raise thyself, and that thou wouldst break the gates of the abyss, that can never be; for thou art a complete spirit, and not purely reduced to that will, in which the gates of the profundity can be broken, but thou raisest thyself above the kingdom of God, and thou canst not attain thereto: the higher thou mountest, the more profoundly thou art in the abyss; and nevertheless thou seest not God, who is nevertheless so near thee.

53. That is why it is only in this life, whilst thy soul holds to the will of the affective base, that it can happen that thou break the gates of the profundity, and that thou penetrate into God by a new birth. For here thou hast for assistant the dear and very noble virgin of the divine love or SOPHIA. She conducts thee by the gate of the noble spouse, which is in the centre, in the limit of separation between the kingdom of heaven and of hell; she begets thee of her blood and of her death in the water of the life; she plunges and washes therein thy false works, so that they follow thee not, and that thy soul bear not their hideous mark, but that it be figured according to the first image in Adam before the fall: to wit, into a pure, chaste, and modest image of the noble virgin Sophia, without any particular knowledge of thy vices of here below.

54. Wilt thou say: What is the new birth or the regeneration? or how does it happen in man? Hear and see: obstruct not thy affective base 5 let not the spirit of this world, with its power and its pomp 3 fill this

affective base; arm thyself with thy courage, and pierce through and through the spirit of this world. Incline thy affective base toward the joyous love of God; make a firm and serious resolution in thy soul, to traverse the attract of this world, and not to take heed of it. Think that in this world thou art not at home, but that thou art a foreign guest, shut up in a hard prison; call and supplicate him who has the key of the prison, submit thyself to him in the obedience of the justice, of the chastity and of the truth; seek not the kingdom of this world so ardently, it will attach itself to thee enough without that; then the chaste Sophia will penetrate profoundly and with brightness into the affective base, and will lead thee to thy spouse who has the key of the gate of the profundity; remain constantly before him who will give thee to eat of the celestial manna wherewith thou shalt be revived; thou wilt become strong, and thou wilt combat against the gates of the profundity; thou must traverse them as does the aurora, and even though thou wert here captive in the night, nevertheless there will appear to thee rays of the aurora of the day in paradise; there where is thy chaste virgin or Sophia; and where she awaits thee with a joyous choir of angels who will receive thee with delights into thy new spirit, and into thy regenerated affective base.

55. And although in effect, thou must bathe thyself with thy body in the tenebrous night, in the brambles and the thorns, so that the demon, and also this world, bruise thee and tear thee, and not only, spit upon thee, despise thee, debase thee and disdain thee ex-I.
