io5. In truth, I grant that she has the key to open purgatory, but the other key that she has opens not heaven; but only the strong-box out of which one pays the wages to the strayed soul, in sending it with good passports into paradise. Then the prostitute believes that she goes into heaven

107. Thou, blind servant of the antichrist, when thou employest thy prayers and thy ceremonies for the souls 5 when thou takest upon thee to redeem one which is perhaps in heaven, or else quite in the abyss with the demon, how imaginest thou not that the demon plays with thee? »n -

w hast thou made thyself, upon the earth, a kingdom of heaven, for thy cupidity? why deceivest thou the poor souls of men? Convert thyself, or else thou wilt go into the eternal purgatory.
109. However nevertheless there is something in purgatory, and it is not so dead as the demon spreads it, solely to be able thereby to devour the beast, with the woman who is seated upon it. And also is he a wolf; and he is followed by cunning and hypocrisy, in which is begotten anew an antichrist, who is worth no more than the first. He does but flatter under the skin of the fox, ( and the wolf is within ) until he obtain the kingdom: if he could become great, how he would devour the hens of the poor world! But before he be ripe and fit to be devoured in the anger, he shall be chased by the lily into the marvels; this lily pushes there toward the north, in the midst of the choleric tempest.
iio. Since the world invents so much upon the subject of purgatory 5 we will then lay the foundation of it in the light of nature, and see how that will be taken, and whether we can sound it: for we must contemplate life and death, and besides the gates where the soul goes by death into life, as well as in all the principles; behold of what importance is the object contained in this point.

CHAPTER NINETEENTH.
Of the entrance of the holy souls into God, and of the 1 entering of the impious souls into perdition.

If it is separated from the body without being regenerated, there result lamentations and desires: it is that which has occasioned the confusion of Babel, so that men have invented many things to deliver souls.
2L The greater part of these things have no foundation in the light of nature; one could not
find any; they have been rather invented by
cupidity, gourmandise and fraud: that is
why the antichristian kingdom rests upon this

base, and it is thence that a true Babel of confusion is come out. Thence also is come the anger by which Babel breaks itself; this anger is begotten of Babel, and it is the harsh anger of God which shines in the breaking or the destruction of Babel, because she is born in fraud.
