to penetrate into the marvels of the great God, for his glory. Why hast thou abandoned love, and art thou become a murderer? Was not cupidity thy sin, by which thou cherishedst not so much the members of thy body or thy brothers, as thyself? Thou wouldst alone be beautiful; thy way alone was to be reputed holy.
17- Why was there a fratricide between Abel and Cain? The proud proper honour led Cain astray, so that he saw with an evil eye the piety of Abel for which he was cherished of God. Why was Cain not equally humble and pious?
18. Wilt thou say that the demon had deceived him? That is true: he deceives thee also, so that thou see not with a good eye the merits and the advantages in other men. Has God then put thee in a rank more elevated than theirs? art thou not the child of Eve? My dear, tell me the truth, art thou not rather the antichrist, who, under a veil, art mounted upon the courser of the demon? It seems to me that I see thee. Hearken: when thou camest from paradise into this world, why hast thou not remained in thy true love?

why hast thou not rejoiced in thy neighbour? why lovest thou not the members of thy body? why adornest thou not thy brother with thy ornaments? has he not been present to thy sight? Was not the earth thy property? couldst thou not do, in that, what thou wouldst have wished? who is it that prevented thee from it? why livedst thou not with thy brother? thou wouldst have had always enough of it, thou wouldst never have wanted for anything. If thy humility toward thy brother had sustained itself, his toward thee would have sustained itself also. What great delights there would have been upon the earth! what need wouldst thou have had of money of gold and of silver if unity had continued? and then how much glory and honours mightest thou not have procured for thyself!
19. If thou hadst adorned thy brother or thy sister, they would have adorned thee in their turn with their obliging love. Believest thou that it would have been a sin if thou hadst covered thyself with gold and with silk out of regard for thy brother, and for the great honour of God?
20. O! thou, blind Babel, I must tell it thee, how much art thou not thus become insensate? thou hast let thyself be beset by the region of the stars, and pervert by the frightful demon; thou art become a perjured prostitute before God? Thou hast built upon the earth a reign according to the stars? Thou conductest thy region in the same manner that they conduct theirs. If they beget by the elements, and consume afterward, thou doest as much with thy children. Thou begettest them, and afterward thou massacrest them; thou excitest wars, and thou art a murderer because

of thy pride and of thy cupidity, so that upon the earth thou hast never place enough.
ai.^Believest thou that God has pleasure in that? In truth, the spirit of the great world takes pleasure therein, and by the same spirit the harsh anger of God, since they inqualify the one with the other, and are of one same root.
22. Believest thou that the prophets spoke only of the holy and joyous love of God, and of the heart of God when they said to the kings of Israel: Enter into combat, you shall vanquish; God will give you the victory. They have, in effect, spoken of God, but of his anger against sins, and by the spirit of the great world which would devour what it had made, so much that thereby, love was extinguished.
23. Or else, thinkest thou that God sent Moses, to beat the kings of the pagans in the promised land, as if he had wished to procure himself a great joy in these murders? Give thyself not up to this idea, see under the veil of Moses, thou wilt find things very different.
24. Why has God retained Israel forty years in the desert, and nourished them with the bread of heaven? It is so that they might become a people rich in love 5 that the one might love the other, and that they might attach themselves to God in one single love. That is why he promulgated their law, to see if they could live in the love of the father; then he would have sent them among the pagans, and they would have converted them by their prodigies, as that came to pass in the time of the apostles. Seeing that they were nourished
