CHATEAUX A CYTHÈRB

CASTLES AT CYTHERB

An invincible tendency of Tthe soul makes us profit by the least clearing in the shadows of life to tell ourselves a poem of hypothethical happiness, ïstar questioned herself, what other life hers would be, at the stroke of the magic wand that would change M"^^ Capimont into M™^ Nergal. Nothing costs in the things that carry one away: all is penitential where there is force:

What an evocation of sweet hours ; to contemplate him at work above all: to crouch, attentive chimera, respectful sphinx, rurring she-cat in a corner of shadow and to stay there motionless, watching the man of genius bring forth! She did not know the nervous impossibility Nergal was in of bearing a look upon him during the work.

Then, when the Be- loved should throw down the calamus, to spring up at him at a bound, to invade him with a caress, and after a tauny intoxication, to ruminate together .their voluptuousness in

naked poses, and proudly tender. At last sleep, but sleep upon im other bed than love ; a fresh bed, a white bed, a calm bed, and in that bed smelling of iris and of the young girl, a slow seeking of union of the limbs, and that pose found, a refusal of desire, and to fall asleep in a sensation deliciously falsified of lovers who hold one another and do not embrace, who wish to hold one another and not to take one another. Oh! the drowsinesses called up by a double silence: the appeasing of the nerves letting the soul exteriorise itself, and to feel the heart, as it were come to the surface of the skin, by caresses laid birdwise, caresses of dragonflies upon the water of a spring, and kisses barely laid like butterflies; finally that apotheosis idea of all love: « What matter not to wake again, I should have died in his arms ».

Those who have loved will remember the spiritual voluptuousnesses of such drowsings and will understand that bitter regret of a mistress, who had passed during years long and frequent hours of love, but who cried out, at the death of her prince charming: « We have not slept together ».

To leave waking and life at the same time is for the enamoured soul a conception; for the body, a delight, that nothing equals and perhaps the most real of all voluptuousness.

Semitry has bequeathed us as many experiments as traditions: it belonged to the metaphysicians of the Kabbalah to study voluptuousness: and the texts

give us with a significant recidivity, two formulas of possession « he had pressed her breasts, he had slept with her ». The first of those expressions could not be explained in the vulgar tongue in this reign of the protestants, where the novelist who studies the erotic periphery is insulted. The second indicates what penetration without analogue the slumbering amplexion signifies. Now, Istar belonged to the voluptuous race par excellence: if that expression of making Flove had not fallen too low to be picked up and still written in Fart, one would have but to set that fact of the refusal of the lips, of Fthe ignorance of the kiss which is proper to the hindoo woman, even the bayadere, beside the almost erotomaniac casuistries of the Talmud.

Nergal did not divine to what precise evocations Fthe imagination of Istar delivered itself, but he knew he would never meet in the world, were he to live a hundred years, young and handsome, a seeker and favoured, an instrument of lust so Stradivarius as that woman, whom he was not even to touch finger to finger.

ï/the amorous atmosphere

The most singular of the brief words that the biblical scholia accord to the disaster of the Pentapolis: « They set aflame Tthe very air they breathed.» erase with explanation the apparent enormity of the rain of fire.

The inflammation of the atmospheric gases can theoretically be produced by some abnormality of the human fluids.

If ever a mage, like the colossus of Rhodes, possesses a spread of thought that plants him on the right upon hypothesis, on the left upon Texperiment, a new science, vaster than a sea, because all will flow together into it, will be constituted:

hyperphysics.

In that mathesis, the first norm of analogy teaches the transmission of movements from one of the three worlds to another ; and theorises ill misfortune,
