They will go to her house officially to summon her to shut her door to thee: she will grow indignant. Then she will be warned that such and such salons will be made hostile to her. Around the heroic woman a sanitary cordon is stretched, and opinion * whispers: « Passion alone blinds to that point; Nergal is her lover. » The pretended friends will say to her full in the face: « At least, do not flaunt yourself. » Should she, driven out of herself, draw herself up and cry to them • « I can be terribly avenged. » They will say: « Fair lady, we should make you leave the town, if Nergal published his book. » What wilt thou do then, justiciary of letters whose sword cannot strike without killing the being noble and gentle and dear? Thou wilt do as I did, thou wilt do as all do, thou wilt hold thy peace, and the filthy province will continue to bear her fair renown of virtue.

— But, — said Nergal, — I can guard myself from that feminine friendship which would force my silence.

— No, thou wilt see the province only by penetrating into her intimacy, by living there; and thou couldst not live there without drawing to thee the consanguine being.

— Whether thou colossalisest thy picture or whether it be real why hast thou not painted it, instead of lousing dates about the famous canvases?

— Because the administration of the Beaux-Arts, in a republic, will have no novelist; I should have lost that inspection which makes me live, if I had made an original work.

The novel has not yet enough quarterings: Balzac raised it so high that the public considers it the Paris article of literature; novelty, this literary form having had its whole evolution in one man, baffles the current ideas of selection. In that barracks of books, of surly and uncomplaisant tone, the Bibliothèque nationale, ask at the public room of the rue Colbert for a volume of the Ce médie humaine; with what offended air the corporal on duty will look thee up and down: « We do not give out novels HERE. » Thy request insults the dignity of the establishment. At Paris, the City and France refuse the free reading of Balzac. Les Illusions perdues^ la Recherche de l'absolu are not serious things for the pedantry that presides over the national collections!

Democracies , living conspiracies against the man of imagination, feel well that he despises them and likens them to the mud whence they issued: Inde irœ.

— Nevertheless, the curatorships and librarianships are a little outside that filth called universal suffrage.

— Were they outside it! the writer has for enemy the bureaucrat and the diplomaed pupil of higher, lower or middle studies. In war, the franc-tireur, the franc-writer in peace, do not share the prerogatives of the regulars. Normalism completes the domestication of whoever would escape militarism: Ode

to the column! Is not the University a galley-crew of minds? Man or beast, one has a rack only at the price of a collar, and in present society the novelist appears a stage-beater.

So he is forced to talent. The economist, the politician, the critic, the erudite even are borne up by their kind of works; one does not ask whether « the variations of pauperism » be written and of profound views: la Revue des Deux-Mondes^ type of that commodity, does it not enjoy the greatest prestige accorded in the Occident to a periodical, whereas there exists no magazine emptier, less written; tear off the cover, thou wilt believe thyself running through la Revue des Quatre-Cantons; we are come to the tailors of London and the literature of Geneva! The moral atmosphere is poisoned with protestantism; God save us from rhenish manners!

The fogs of the Rhône will make thee see whether Saïgas dreams, amplifies or scarcely even stammers the atrocious provincial reality.

After a silence:

— I believe in intuitions. Saïgas, and I seek sophisms to remain at Paris. Is it not absurd, instead of confirming my resolution thy discourse discourages me? I see a holy Sebastiana bound to my name as to a pillory and a cowardly town coming to cast its philistine stones and to slaver its pharisaic insults, without my having either the right or the means to be Lohengrin.

— What the pagans called their genius, what the provençal poet names the star, and the church the guardian angel, the familiar daimon warns thee, hear it! The hero, and the intellectual is the modern form of him, must meteorise himself, vanished as soon as appeared; and above all, at the greatest never, not linger among the little; he diminishes himself there, sterilely. Psychologist of the exception, continue to invent Séraphitus, Claës; at the spectacle of life that crawls, the wings of thy spirit will close; thou wouldst become passional, and the gesture of crushing vermin, even made by genius, is less noble than that which points to heaven.
