That dualism of spectator and of actor in the same acts of life, that doubling of the personality wherein one is two, one who suffers, vibrates and laughs, and another who analyses the suffering, notes the vibration and remains grave: that phenomenon when it presents the simultaneity of the lyricism of impression and of the synthesis of judgment marks the highest degree of individualism. The work of cerebrality is made of interiority: instead of extravasating oneself one is resorbed; man becomes the place, the matter, the text of the work. The aesthetic will never be anything but an « I » conquering others; and it would be scientific to say of a wearisome character: his « I » does not burst out enough.

The theologian, Lacuria, the mage de Guaïta, the epopt Saint- Yves, the sinologue Adrien Peladan, the linguist Ledrain borrow from the speculative nature of their activity^ an almost entire indifference to renown. Ascending to the divine, to the mystery, applied to philological reconstitutions, intellectuality does not grow feverish: there is nothing there of the heart. as at the mere sulking of the Beloved? Nelson kept his coolness at the boarding and during the tempest, but at Emma's frown?...
The empire of the world one day floated upon the waters, but Cleopatra smiled: Actium testifies that our heart moves us more violently than the idea. And so the poet puts to work more living parts of himself than the savant, so living that criticism tortures him and that indifference can kill him. One could not cite a numerous production continued without success.
Cerebral parturition analogic to gestation shows the brain like the uterus fecundated by a vibration of prolonged waves, gestated, carried and after a period of foetal informity, a slow formation, until the bringing forth of the Chimera.
Now the miscarriage, redoubtable above as below, puts in question the life of the being that engenders, and the umbilication of the Word is not cut like that of the flesh; the blows dealt to the work, the author receives them infinitely dolorous. Success is a happy delivery, an organic deliverance which recuperates the living forces spent or risked. The bourgeois, were they learned, would discover in the poet's irritability a purely biological claim.

in return, flees into the ground. It is therefore always very bold to throw one's heart to the public and to run a capital risk that it fall back heavily; the circumstantial is remediable, the potential is not.
The rogues of the Revolution, failed men of letters, made themselves a destiny anew in blood, by humbug; the marquis de Pescara, a mediocre enough poet, survives as a warrior: banter! truly it suffices to be brute and advocate at once to play the first roles from 1793 to 1887; as for d'Avalos, he has the merit of his wife, and she that of the love of Michel- Angelo. The Bonaparte too, impotent to write well, killed excellently; when one is good for nothing in this world, one still makes a soldier or a deputy: one is MacMahon or M. Grévy.
Nergal had not the need of approbation; without opinion upon, his work he kept a single certitude: that he belonged to the noblest race of the earth. The comte de Gobineau^ a rare and great mind whom the public knows not, wrote a volume to affiliate himself across the pirates to the god Odin, that myth of the extreme keltean exodus. Nergal considered his name of a babylonian god as a helm more sparkling than all those of the hall of the crusades; but a celestial bastard, he asked of inferior humanity, nothing but peace.

their tawny eyes he would have raised his chimeras and neither judge nor trooper would have troubled the profane almoner, the smiling confessor of the Monna Lisas. Yes, nothing more enviable than a life subtle and calm, full of music, of thoughts and of odours, in a noble decor, illustrated with women proud and heavily adorned.
If he quitted that dream of an existence as intellectual chaplain, he conceived himself in solar Mars; and too profound to believe he could long hold in check the fatality of ugliness that oppresses this world, he spoke no more of a wished-for life, but of a death of choice.
