Renan wrote under the title of Vie de Jésus; despising the lay thought of his time, at variance withroman exotericism, the profession of the pure idea appeared to him impossible: written it interests no one; to speak it one must be examined, which recalled to him at once the great anger and the great laughing-stock of his life: the conscription board and the baccalaureate.
One summer evening, at twilight, he was emerging from the skylight, his only window, attentive to the formidable eddy of the good city; night fell upon his reverie, and an evidence furrowed his thought as the heat lightnings furrowed before him the heavy sky. A Cheopsian pyramid overhanging the steeples, dominating the domes, la Comédie humaine lit up like the set piece of a pyrotechny for an imperial anniversary. « There is the modern cathedral », he exclaimed-^ , and he bowed « Salve et Gloria, Papa Balzac», the pope of the nineteenth century, the eponym still contested, incontestable nevertheless, the Noah who built an eternal ark for the whole bestiary and for all the angelism of the last latin phases.
He resolved upon the novel, as he would have taken the pencil in the Renaissance; the epoch willed it more than he.
How comes to the savage the idea of cutting himself a bow and arrows, the art of the archer? Nergal's vocation was nothing but the instinct of self-preservation.
Knowing man evil from birth, ill compressed under the double pressure of the priest and the gendarme, he entered active life without believing in the

justice of judges, in the goodness of philanthropists; with the most vivid sensation of insecurity, and an equal fear of the bandit and of the policeman, of the uhlan and of the lancer. He had until then asked of society nothing but tolerance; and the province had refused it him: long hair, a few personal ideas escaped from his ordinarily closed lips had bristled the meridional bourgeoisie.
He needed credit, for his justification: he therefore formulated to all comers the promise of art at which men smile but which makes young personalities tolerated. He engaged himself to become glorious, and his word was so affirmative that women loved him, that men helped him: he opened himself a moral credit.
For the rest, that indifference of Paris, the simple nonmalice of the passer-by seemed to him exquisite, on coming out of the crackling of hatred, of the musketry of slander that is called provincial relations. He thanked God that there was in the world a city where each is so occupied with himself that he forgets to torture his neighbour; he hoped to discover Civilised men among the french Barbarians.
Folded back upon himself, conceiving heroic psychologies, he laboured. A stupor greeted his beginning, a tranquil negation of all that stands and is honoured, an enthusiastic exaltation of what is rebuffed and despised. Gautier offered his rights as a citizen to see Julia Grisi come out of the bath: Nergal would have paid to have them taken from him. Lamartine swore and cursed in

like a carter when he received the tax-notice sheets: Nergal would have voted only with the bayonet in his back. Flouting positivism, treading with an insulting foot upon republican sophisms, buffeting with a backhand of ideality the whole positivist evolution, and acclaiming the progress of to-morrow with a « Finis Polonia! » he made hostile to himself less the atheists and es masons than the holders of the past.
By a need of equity superior even to his dearest filiations, he was beginning a catholic apology with the promise of unwinding in God's sun the entrails of the inquisitors, should they return one day, and rose up, the Gospel open, against the Nimroudic formula of de Maistre. Now, above all, he hated blind Force, and his Kaldean origin burst out in relentlessness against Bonaparte, the avatar of the assyrian Brutes with the heavy chariots, the Ramollots with curled beard, with the prodigious muscles of Isdubar.
His execration of the uncle and his indulgence for the nephew were not understood: to refuse glory to conquerors, to refuse to peoples and to kings the right of conquest; to refuse his participation ina national work and to declare anathema the patriot prelate: is theremoreneeded to raise up themost generous and also the least subtle part of the public. He who wrote: « Even guilty or mad, France must be sacred for the whole universe » was called a Prussian: as proud was called the fanatic who would have abandoned his work

for the honour of carrying Balzac's proofs to and fro. Nergal was misprised as soon as known; and from the day he had parturated, he discovered in himself a new faculty and one that is the characteristic of the exceptional man.
