Si Dieu avait exterminé tous les Œlohites, et comme annulé le Verbe de Satan, il eût dès lors pardonné; la durée du dam implique la parabole du méfait;

than Kaldeans; and is it not a question of judiciary right, to concede those preoccupied with heaven, grandsons of the terrestrialised Angels. The Semite and Arya concordance has been stated here (1) between the Symposion and the Bereschit; but the violence one does to the public in forcing it to the mysteries would have no effect, without a parcelling and a dispersion which render it assimilable. Aristophanes and Hahnock say the same thing according to their different genius; the greek poet does not give the angelic fall; at the human beginning, a vague epithet which expresses the relativity of his initiation, there were three genders; whence had the third come? he knows not. As for the superhuman and troubling element, the two texts agree, and the androgyne forces Zeus to dualise him, as the Œlohite obliges Iahvé to reduce human life, which one might understand as the virtuality obscured in them in consequence of the disobedience. Now, essence being unmodifiable, the œlohimic spirits even fallen remain androgynous and this last word must be understood as a superlative of entity equilibrated in force» Saint Thomas teaches that the angel can make but one single act of adhesion; those therefore who have adhered to the incarnative transgression adhere immutably to the Laws of humanity. Consequently, between the angels remained angels and us, there moves an angelic humanity, perpetually in

double and contrary attraction: celestial intellection, human passionality, there is their appalling chastisement. As the Areopagite affirms it, the devils or demons are not evil, they are men by the soul, that is to say suffering and thereby egoistic, unjust and sometimes furious.

If spiritism were not most often a simple fluidic spermatorrhoea, a prostatorrhoea of the nervous system, it would become a formidable [sin above all in the sexual. First, nothing seduces like the establishment of a commerce with the intermediary Œlohim; and certainly, their illumination appears precious; let it be considered they are inconsistent, jealous, uneasy, troublers, men in a word. Nevertheless the paternal sentiment remains living across the fluctuation of all the others, and the fallen angels love their posterity with an immense love: the evil they may have done to humanity has been only in chastisement of what men have made their grandson suffer; and as in that they execute the Norm, God lets them act. Seven times woe to whosoever oppresses the Œlohite; and M. de Bismarck has armed formidable legionaries against himself by the death of king Louis of Bavaria, that noble and gentle dreamer of the Hamletic race pure and not crossed, alas! with that of the Fortinbrases.

If God had exterminated all the Œlohites, and as it were annulled the Word of Satan, he would from that moment have pardoned; the duration of the damnation implies the parable of the misdeed;

and Baudelaire who was not initiated, but who at certain hours saw as the great poets see, has felt the great heart of Satan beat beneath his breast; and he daredtomakehimselftheadvocateof the calumniated Archangel without being able to give a reason, but drawn on by a mysterious bond. To open the metaphysicians is to see evaporate in a smile of Vinci's the gross image of the Evil One; in its place Lucifer-Prometheus. I have said it, the fallen Angels are passional, and consequently haughty, little merciful: when the terrestrials dared address themselves to them they duped them, outraged at that insolence like king's sons who should be begged by a Sancho Panza to hold his foot for him that he might remount. It is impossible to determine the points of relation from us to them; nevertheless the injustice of clerical opinion, and the oppression of their grandchildren have alone brought them to all those unjust and terrible manifestations which fill a Goërres.

Let no one go understanding here a sacrilegious erasure upon the divine decision or some incitement to communicate with the daimons. Their crime passes our understanding, but it was committed out of love for us, they lost themselves but in the light. They must be pitied and even loved a little: only never, at the greatest of nevers, must they be tempted, that is to say given affective access, called upon conjuratively: their baleful love, like that of woman, absorbs not health, nor fortune, but the understanding.
