There has been given to the twenty herds of louts that people Europe a different truth for each: and what is patriotic is always noble. Infamous blasphemy, maxim of Cacus and of Cartouche ! Antony in Cleopatra's arms appears lyrical in works of love: at combats there officiates the Molochisne of Hatred. Victory, that word rings savage, unless it signify the victory of the Word: nothing exists but God, and the souls of Nergal and of Istar, whom passion cannot detach from duty, are

of another heroism than the captains of lansquenets warring, with sword what wilt thou, against the Teutons or the Chinese, at the command of a Mac-Mahon or some other nullity.

When Balzac launched his great perhaps upon the equal splendour of the drama of Clochegourde and the drama of Austerlitz, he appeared bold, and even that shadow of truth stupefied.

Today, the Theore conscious of the old mysteries, attentive to the young experiments, unites in his hand both the anthropological clarity and the intellective gleam: at that double torch, the concept of glorious homicide and its corollaries of honoured theft vanishes while a great contempt of Force seats itself in the brains where the true conscience of the world resides.

Bonaparte, not as Corsican or dictator, but Bonaparte the contractor of charnel-houses, the pimp ofthe hyena, the steward of the crows, the inventor of cannon-fodder, the national Troppmann, after having soiled the history of France, soils still the work of the great Honoré and that of the great Eliphas.

His horrible splendour nevertheless diminishes ; the cerebral man escapes the spellbinding of renown and Taine has planted in the great nimroudic carrion the scalpel of analysis where tomorrow a pope will come to attach the excommunicating bull against the historical cult of the scourges and of the monster.

The grandiose spectacles of that little theatre where

we all play the role contrary to our nature are seen only in the triple search for the Truths, the Loves and the Beauties,

After an idea and a form ; nothing higher than a sentiment of expansion, and that is why two scenes only prevail in dignity over the intimacy of the Gloriettes: the meditation of a Paracelsus or the chiselling of Michel- Angelo.

Certainly, so-called civilised humanity is not benign to the thinker and to the artist: the judge, the general, are his enemies: nevertheless, one can still think and work in a relative peace ; the world pardons a superiority that promises it high pleasures: but Love, that thought which has but one word and one form, the « I love you » and the kiss, that joy without witnesses, that double song without echo, that sweet mystery officiable by two only, seems a theft done to all and what a theft! Gold, distinctions, all the social rattlery, on reflection is barred by the great exordium of saint Chrysostom: Love, it! is illumined with the synonymies of happiness.

Be rich, be glorious, be the masters, they will pardon you your goods, your titles, and power: Be happy and the world is indignant. Happiness hides itself in the fields or in Paris: in the province, it is discovered instantly and a whole town collaborates in poisoning it. The envious province sleeps no more if two beings dream a fine dream there: and when Lyon the protestant, which had spied on Nergal, posting

shoe-blacks at Perrache as at the cornas d'Herbouville, learned that the novelist spent a whole day at the Gloriettes from noon to midnight, the venomous town hissed like an enormous knot of Vipers.^ The Œlohites ardent to enjoy themselves, feeling the impossibility of a durable frequentation, swore to one another to live in continual intimacy before parting for ever. That resolution made almost every visit and outing of Istar's cease, and Nergal went nowhere any more: at each invitation he refused, a surcharge of hatred was added to the lyonnais anger.

Never had the brutified town been so openly braved.

— No — cried M.^^ Poitevinière, — in the memory of a Lyonnaise; such cynicism has been seen: let them love one another then in the middle of Bellecour.

The bigots thought first of breaking the tête-àtête of the Gloriettes, but they were not received or with such a haughtiness that the role of killjoy appeared to them unworthy of their souls of frequent confessions: the men knew Capimont's strength of Hercules and his violence and cared little to be knocked down. By a perfidious adroitness, a favourable calm came about: as the sea becomes imniobile and oily before rising, opinion hypocritically cradled with its false complicity the intoxication of the Glo riettes: each woman promised herself a morsel of that woman's reputation ; each disdained man a shred of that pride ; and the lyonnaise hyena and

the lyonnais jackal prepared themselves for the quarry: Nergal appearing the providential huntsman who forced that virtue and delivered it to the fangs of the calumnious city.
