Strange excellence of instinct; before men raised the great tower of their pride, the heart of woman beats as high as heaven, breaks the equilibrium of a celestial legion and hurls it down to earth, in the greatest mirage of passion that has been imagined. Three times over, woman decides the fate of the world: curious in Eden, amorous at Ereck, and in finality redemptive, virgin mother of God himself.
The apocryphon of Hahnock, of which we have the ethiopic version and the greek, at the seventh, relates: « It came to pass that there were born to men daughters fair and elegant; and when the angels, the children of the heavens, had seen them, they became enamoured of them; and they said among themselves: « Let us choose mortal mistresses « and have children with them ». Then Samyaza (Satan), the prince of those angels, cried out: « I shall have the c< responsibility of the crime as chief. » They swore and bound themselves by mutual execrations; to the number of two hundred they descended upon Arady (Ereck). » M. Cahen, in his Bible so esteemed, has pushed silliness so far as to write, at that passage culminating in interest: « The sons of the great saw that the daughters of the people were fair. » Something like « the peasant girl is pretty », from a lord of François 1% in the Hugo manner. The initiate poet of the second Faust had the obscure vision of the truth, in his orphic creation
34 Isfarof Euphorion, son of Faust the Guibbor and of the Œlohite Helen. Each of the chiefs of those celestial decuries taught men some modality of the ideal: Azazyel taught coquetry, the art of painting the eyebrows and of mounting gems into jewels. The sequel of the text understood esoterically paints for us the coming upon earth of the idealist even in his most modern formula.
The women conceived beings so extraordinary that their understanding surpassed that of the terrestrials by three hundred cubits; nothing contented them, it became impossible to satisfy them; they turned against the terrestrials, whom they abandoned for their vulgarity; they said to the birds: « you crawl »; to the wild beasts: « you are insipid »; to the reptiles: « you are without suppleness»; to the fishes: « you swim like dead things;... we, our flight; we, our strength; we, our bound; we, our fluidity are quite other. »
Here then is the most ancient testimony of the state of soul called Baudelairean: when man does not amuse himself with the trifles of the sensible world, he becomes monster or saint. According to the pseudo Hahnock, the mirages of the beyond sought led them astray even to crime. Those exceptional ones soon became such elements of disorder that Iahvé reduces their life, as in the Bereschit, and seems, by his resolution of the Deluge, to aim still more at the celestial bastards than at the terrestrials themselves. The Lord said to Michaël: « When their sons (the angels') who are dearer to them than them2 star

selves shall be exterminated, them, thou shalt deliver to the blind dynamic currents; for they are no longer angels and could not be men, and he shall be called daimons (intermediaries) and shall now do the work of light, now the work of darkness, according to the hour of the fatalities of the Fault. »
The rebellion of the celestial spirits is not then a fact anterior to creation, but the immediate cause of the Deluge; and their sin is of love, as much as of pride. Satan wished to suffer, to love and to devote himself; he reckoned to ben^d his nature to the human condition, and his nature could not bend; like the captives of Michel-Ange, his fair features contracted under the carnal bonds; and he caused fear, he who had lost heaven in order to be loved. Misprised, misunderstood, he became wicked and the Norm crushed him, which does not permit one to change sphere.
In chapter LXVIII of Hahnock, saint Michael says to saint Raphael: « My spirit rises up and is angered against the severity of the secret judgment against the Angels; so terrible a sentence is insupportable to my heart »; and saint Raphael: « What heart would not be moved by it; what spirit would not compassionate! They have offended the Lord of spirits, in conducting themselves like Gods »; and further on... Oh! the noble grievances formulated: « Tenemne revealed bitterness and sweetness, writing, the use of ink and of papyrus. By him, there have been seen to multiply those who have gone astray I in their vain wisdom; for men were not

created to cod sign their ideas by means of ink upon papyrus. »
