Is ta r

Prudence which watches and defends from the Evil One with his adroit surprises; Piety which binds us to the sacred: Yo u have lived them, those superhuman virtues, from Bethlehem to Golgotha; and from the salutation of the Mages to the tears of saint John, you were Prudent and Pious Mary.

The Magnification of the vermilion beyond where one shall live jo3^ous in the state of suns incandescent and calm to reverberate God; the Power of the vow that the august inbreath of prayers projects into the ether, and which with one stroke of faith struck as high as the angels makes a miracle come down; Clemency, supreme equity, which unsoils a guilty man with the name of unfortunate; and Fidelity, the superhuman virtue of the hero and of the saint appear upon you, eternal diadem, unique even in Paradise, magnificent Virgin, queen Clement and Constant.

Deceived by the mirages, by the strayed beacon, plaything of the gleam, I believed the firefly a fallen star, and watched for the lightnings to follow my way, a traveller lingering to contemplate the springs; on the edge of the sleeping lakes, I told the hours like beads, Narcissus of my despair; pious under the gaze of women, as before the flaming windows of chapels at mass; the

lens in hand, wresting from the sun sorrow and fire, I have found only in you delectable Madonna the parhelion of God.

The dust of thrones has peopled the desert with simooms carting crushed sceptres; a solemn nothingness guards the hypogea; you the only one enthroned, with your two fair hands dispense the wisdom long sterilised beneath the slumbering sphinx.

Lœtare! your mother's heart with its sweet beating will appease the punishing and lifted right hand of Jesus. Lcetareî your merits surpass all our sins.

Holy cup and filled with certain infinity, living monstrance of the eucharistic God, Your flesh exempt from the stain was the first chalice; and in your lap I see the living altar; splendid alabaster where sublime woman presses the angel and conquers royalty over them. Flower /ost proud, blown at the Word of the Most High, lotus and lily, you embalm the faith, adorable smile of the dogma and great kiss of peace from the divine to the mortal.

You rise up, like a square tower and like a watch-tower. Inviolable acropolis where the Truths are. You rise up, irradiating and clear, and all hell risen up would not shadow your feet. You rise up, resplendent and adorned, absolute perfection and daughter of the Perfect; you are total reason and excellence, andthe golds reflect you into the mineral world.

You rise up, a rainbow over our souls; in you was signed the marvellous pact of the earth's salvation. You rise up, a benign portress, at the

diamond gates of the faery Parad'.se: and with your long fine fingers bless the sinner God would repulse if he could refuse what his mother grants.

You rise at the dawn of our hearts; your benign look stars our cradles; and under the thickened shadow of sin you scintillate, tender solicitude stubborn with warning. It is you who heal of doubt, and who give to the true an aspect conceivable for the lowliest minds. It is you who put back into the despairing heart a little hope; it is you who console, it is you the auxiliary, perpetual and tender, — Madonna of Health, Mother of the Afflicted, Our Lady of good succour.

He even who can rend the mystery, speak to the angels and say God, when he comes to sing a hymn to your glory, has no more voice and his mute viol obeys the bow, for he hears descending from heaven itself the echo of the eternal canticle.

« Queen » sing the Angels, « Mother » the Patriarchs. — « Oh! the accomplishment that you are, Mary » says the prophet. « Supreme apostolate» proclaim the apostles. — The Stephens raising the instrument of torment; while the most sweet Virgins bend the knee, the legion of martyrs sets its palms swaying, and from the prostrate heaven an echo comes to us, and the devout man falls silent, listens and prays low: her whom beside God the nine choirs magnify:

« The Queen conceived without sin. »

By the holy joyous pentagram of your mysteries, Alleluia upon me.

May I truly announce the word that saves, contained in the Gospels; may I always speak of God even to the perverse; may I crush Nimroud in the name of your Son, denier of inept Force and proclaimer of the conscious Goodnesses that make men-Gods.

May I be visited by the sublime ideas^ received by the cause and served by the oether; may the wandering truths alight upon me, giant birds, while sweet sentimentality shall powder its pastel, pollen of Psyche.

May there be born in me the superhuman Word lying at the heart of the old symbols; seated upon the cubic stone may I find again the pentacle of the heart inscribed in the immense circle of the spirit.

May I worthily present it, that Word dictated of heaven; and may the artist in me, equalling the dreamer, wrap the True in a mantle of beauty.
