confirmed further that this sect had determined to bear its first blows upon France / and that after the FALL OF THAT MONARCHY, it was to strike Italy, and rome in particular; that Ximenès, of whom mention has already been made, was one of the principal chiefs; that they were then at the height of the intrigue, and that the Society hath a great quantity of money dispersed in the banks of Amsterdam, of Rotterdam, of London, of Genoa and of Venice » (p. 180-181). _
To insist upon the value of that' deposition would be to outrage the sagacity of the reader. Therefore, the Throne abolished, they fell upon the Altar; the churches closed and devastated; the priests reduced to betray their oaths; the goddess Reason enthroned, under the living emblem of a prostitute, upon the metropolitan altar of Notre-Dame; all the ecclesiastical goods put under sequestration or dena¬ tured; these things and a thousand others besides were but the first effectsofthe jacobin rancour; — and when Bonaparte insulted, sixteen years later, the majesty of the pope captive at Fontainebleau, and, pale with rage, pushed violence (it is said) to the splitting from top to bottom of the pontiff's white robe with a stroke of his steel spur, this enemy of all the sects was ma1 One reads in that same Vie de Cagliostro, published upon the do¬ cuments of the holy Office (italian edition, 179Ü; french trans¬ lation, 1791), this significant phrase, on the subject of the sect of the Illu¬ minated, called of the High Observance; « That one professes the most decided irreligion, employs magic in its operations; under e specious pretext of avenging the death of the Grand Master of the plars, it has principally in view the total destruction of the catholic religion and of the monarchy » (page 90).

king himself, without assuredly suspecting it, the tardy executor of the vengeance of the Templars.
How many like comparisons there would be to make, if our frame lent itself to it!
Let us borrow from Eliphas Lévi, who narrates them so well, one more of those terribly eloquent anecdotes of the French Revolution. — We are in 1792.
« The king was captive in the Temple and the élite of the french clergy in exile, or at the Abbaye. The cannon thundered upon the Pont-Neuf, and menacing placards proclaimed the fatherland in danger. Then unknown men orga¬ nised the massacre. A hideous personage, gigan¬ tic, with a long beard, was everywhere there were priests to butcher. — There, he said to them: with a savage sneer, that is for the Albigenses and the Vaudois! That is for the Templars! That is for the Saint-Barthélemy! That is for the proscribed of the Gévennes!... And he struck with rage, and he struck al¬ ways, with the sabre, with the cleaver, with the clu¬ b. The weapons broke and were renewed in his hands; he was red with blood from head to foot; his beard was all clotted with it, and he swore with appalling blasphemies that he would wash it only with blood.
« It was he who proposed a toast to the nation to the an¬ gelic Sombreuil.
« After the death of Louis XVI, at the very moment when he had just expired under the axe of the Revolu¬ tion, the man with the long beard — that wandering-jew of

murder and of vengeance — mounted the scaffold before the terrified crowd; he took royal blood full in his two hands, and shaking it over the head of the people^ he said in a terrible voice: People of France, I bap¬ tise thee IN THE NAME OF JACQUES and of lib erty * / »
Another citation from the learned Eliphas is going to bring us ba¬ ck to the person and to the trial of the initiate Jacques Gazotte, whose strange adventure we have chosen to serve as conclusion to this chapter.
It is known under what conditions the kabbalist Pasqualis-Martinez came to offer initiation to the novelist of the Diable amoureux; it is a whole mysterious legend to which we shall doubtless have to return elsewhere. — However that may be, the abbé Constant, after having sketched the history of it, makes his recital followed by the reflections ensuing; « The initiation of Gazotte was to make of him a devoted partisan of order and a dangerous enemy for the anarchists; and, in effect, we have seen that there is question of a mountain upon which one rises to regenerate oneself, according to the symbols of Gagliostro; but that mountain is white with light like the Thabor, or red with blood like the Sinai and the Calvary. There are two chroma¬ tic syntheses, says the Zohar: the white, which is that of har¬ mony and of the moral life, and the red which is that of war and of the material life: the colour of day and that of blood. The Jacobins wished to hoi¬ st the standard of blood, and their altar rose already
