L’on

But now* a black ram with incan¬ descent eyes comes running like a hurricane from the northern quarters. He bleats to reassure her whom he carries: a superb girl ' all naked, astride his soft fleece. She struggles greatly and weeps... She is the awaited victim, she is the Queen of the Sabbath.

They press about her with every mark of a respectful impatience. Come down from her mo¬ unt and while they acclaim her, she veils her beauty in the disorder of her long hair.

The Master of ceremonies raises his golden wand with solemnity; the Devil rises and salutes the young girl; at last he comes down from his chair: the black Mass is about to begin.

Humble goat-feet have dug towards the left a hole in the ground: Leonard betakes himself to it in great pomp in order to urinate first. The chief of the assembly imitate him. It is the lustral water for the aspersions — and which serves to baptise the newcomer. Then the sorceresses, dipping in it two fingers of the left hand, devoutly cross themselves backwards.

Now the procession sets out again. The

virgin whom the Goat is to initiate is led back to the altar of Teutad; she there receives successively all the sacraments of hell.

That done, she is anointed with an unguent based on cantha¬ rides and stramonium: a tickling intoxication invades by degrees her poor body ignorant of spasms, and now she writhes, maddened in her modesty by the automatism of desire.

At the Introit, Satan prescribes that the children be removed, too young to take part in the great mystery — in the great sacrilege of the universal communion of love. They go down towards the Devil's ponds, white switches in hand, to pasture there the troop of in¬ numerable toads, all baptised and clothed in green velvet or scarlet silk, with a little bell at the neck.

Between them and the Great assembly, the sprites of the Aër weave a thick cloud, and Leonard proceeds to the Consecration of the newcomer.

Thrown back upon the altar, terrified and all panting, she receives the harsh kiss of the god. It is a frightful rending, the burn of a stake of red iron, then at once the anguish of an abundant, icy inundation *...

Let us be brief. — All the demonologists dwell for ever upon over-conscientious details, which we take care not to reproduce.

^ Igneam esse diaboli mentulam, frigidum vero semen ejus, Sabbathi meretrices unâ voce confitentur.

2 We shall cite but one of them, in latin: « Aliquid turpissimum (quod tamen scribam), astruunt: videlicet dæmonem incubum uti membro genitali bifurcato, ut simul utroque vase abutatur. »

THE SORCERER

An unbridled round, winding about the couple with howls of fierce joy, mingles and confounds the sexes and the ranks, back to back. The chain is broken only for the adulterous, incestuous and sodomitical frolics scattered over the heath by moonlight... Incest above all is held in honour, for by it the Sabbath becomes the eternal nursery of Satan: « There was neuer a perfect sorcerer and enchanter who was not begotten of the father and the daughter or of the mother and the son L » Meanwhile, upon the very body of the new prie¬ stess — a palpitating altar — the stinking Goat ^ officiates: he offers wheat to the Spirit of the Earth that makes the harvests grow; he gives flight to little birds which carry, across the nocturnal sky, the vows of those pre¬ sent to the demon of Liberty.

Then a symbolic cake is kneaded, baked and con¬ secrated upon the bloodied loins of the priestess: it is the Confarreatio, the host of impure love, the offering of universal evil, the infernal communion that is distributed to the whole assembly...

The hour has struck for the fraternal feast, and the impubescent herdsmen bring back from pasture the battalion of to¬ ads confided to their vigilant care.

The old furies, for whom love is no more than a twice sterile reminiscence, have made ready

This citation from Sylvester Prierias says enough: on reading this nameless turpitude, taken at random among a thousand, one will easi¬ ly imagine what the others may be.
