difficulty of understanding that the mystical body of the Christ (or his Church) alone possesses a homo¬ geneity of essence and a reality of archetype: and so its head (its virtual essence or its principle) is represented as pre-existing the development of its body, and that head is Jesus Christ. — As for 1 Antichrist, his mystical body, wholly of accretion and factitious aggregation, is painted for us headless, that is to say destitute of an essence of its own and of a radical principle. That head, in fact, arising late at the consumma¬ tion of the ages, being but the resultant and the product of the body, figures a synthesis contingent and not absolute, totalised and not radical, consequent upon and not anterior to the elements grouped in it.

For — be it Devil or Messiah of the Devil, be it Satan

or his Antichrist — the eternal symbol of discor¬ dance, of schism and of negation, can on no ground become a principle of unity. It is conceivable only as the abstract type of an accidental and transitory state, or again, in another light, as the relative synthesis of evil beings, regarded as evil, and not 2 as beings.

The Antichrist, certain very illuminated doctors foretell us, will be conceived of Beelzebub in the womb

of a sacrilegious nun. Always that same paral- . lel of opposition with Jesus Christ, conceived of the Holy Ghost in the bowels of an immaculate virgin...

The false Messiah will have for body only a fluidic or spectral appearance and will speak all tongues. Boguet adds that he will be continually at war and will persecute the just; lastly that he will accomplish the most astonishing prodigies and will mark his faithful with a sign upon the forehead and the hand.

Our friend Jhouney, in his fine esote¬ ric poem of Sorath, thus apostrophises the Antichrist:

Thou shalt raise the cross between thy hardy hands,

Thou shalt work miracles even by the cross ^!

Let us underline in passing these two verses of a truly occult bearing. The poet of the Black Lilies has known how to strike the rock and make the living spring gush from it; but such is not the usual case of the mystics who have spoken of the Christ of darkness — and we could not compile all their prophecies, often ridiculous and contradictory. The curious will consult with interest the works of Abdeel, of Raban-maur and of Malvenda, the masterpieces of the kind.

Never, be it understood, did some dangerous heresi¬ arch or some bold innovator of philosophy appear upon the stage of the world to draw the peoples into error, or into a current of truth

too abrupt (esteemed thereby premature, hazardous, untimely), without the anthropomorphists of or¬ thodoxy crying Antichrist.

Simon the Magician, Apollonius of Tyana, Marcion, Manes, Valentinus, Arius, Luther, Zwingli and Calvin were among others gratified with this peremptory imputation. — Starting from the fine definition of saint John, spiritus qui solvit Christum, — one may say that all these opinions, too feverishly intran¬ sigent no doubt, enclose a part of truth: the reader will see us subscribe to them, in a certain measure, in chapter ii.

But there is not even Mahomet, the illustrious civi¬ liser of Africa, the Moses of Ishmael — one sent from On High, almost a son of God — to whom this injurious honour has not been done.

The same suspicion weighed on the other hand upon a quan¬ tity of political personages, such as Julian the Wise (called the Apostate), Frederick the Great, Robespierre, Napo¬ leon I" and even Napoleon III. An incredible number of pamphlets have been published in support of these two last theses ~.

^ The heresiarchs and their adherents soon retorted by desig¬ nating the pope as the true Antichrist, and the political catholicism of the Cæsars of the Vatican as the beast of the Apocalypse. An edifying exchange of reciprocal amenities!

2 I possess a most curious one, entitled the Millennium (Frankfort-on-the-Meln, 1866, in-S). This pamphlet is the work of a certain doctor Zimpel, whose mental faculties seem disordered Upon the pink cover is spread a double engraving, figuring the Beast of the Apocalypse with its seven heads, one of which is that of Napoleon

THE TEMPLE OF SATAN

Men of letters, philosophers and scholars were hardly better sheltered from the suspicion: Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, d'Alembert and d'Holbach saw themselves special¬ ly denounced in the xviii century, and I should be much sur¬ prised if some worthy ecclesiastic had not, in our own, believed he deciphered upon the brow of Darwin and of the honest Littré this stigma of reprobation!

It was at every epoch the ambitious mania of the most orthodox theo¬ logians to read the accomplish¬ ment of the ancient predictions in the mirror of contemporary facts...

In short, the Antichrist was sought and found everywhere, even and above all where he was not; but who thought of seeing him where he most evidently was: under the biretta of the inquisitors, the cowl of the exorcists and the doctoral bonnet of the demonographers?...

All three are appalling in the perpetration of their respective businesses: odious, lugubrious businesses...
