Reserving then, without losing sight of it, this scene so revelatory of the great revolutionary drama, let us consu¬ lt the author of an interesting and conscientious work appeared, in 1819, under this title: Des sociétés secrètes en Allemagne, de la secte des illuminés, du Tribunal secret, etc A.

This essayist — who cannot have in matter of illuminism the competence of the abbé Constant envelops all the adepts in one same reproba¬ tion. Between the two schools, all distinction is unknown to him.

It is nevertheless surprising to see him write, fo¬ rty years before the publications of the celebrated occultist, phrases of this stamp; « To find the key of the Revolutions, from the torment of Charles P''to that of Louis XVI, one must always come back to this

intractable sect. The red cap, which we have

seen in 1793 become the emblem of the Jacobins, was the or¬ nament of the british Independents when Crom¬ well raised himself to power. Without going further, is it not very singular, that at the height of our Revolu¬ tion, the first roles should have been filled bythe Paches, the Marats, the Clootzes, the Lazoushis, the Buonaroitis,

the Mirandas, all Illuminated swiss, german, po¬ lish, italian and spanish!... (page 179).

« We have already seen that there were three degrees in the Order of the Illuminated. The most elevated rank was that of the Grand Master; the duc d'Orléans was invested with it in France a few years before the Revolution... (p. 22ô).

« The emperors Joseph II and Léopold, who had penetrated the secrets of the Illuminated, were victims of the Aqua Toffana. — The insurrectional movement of the 5 October, those of the 20 June and of the 10 August were resol¬ ved in assemblies of adepts and of initiates, at the lodge of the Contrat social, rue Coq-Héron: I have it from an eye-wit¬ ness. Robespierre played a role, but he was not at all initiated *: that is why he was over¬ thrown. He wished to isolate himself from the sect whereof he was the instrument: his head fell upon the scaffold-

« Never had the Illuminated seen themselves so powerful; they disposed, in 1793, of the headsman's axe... Genius, valour, talents, virtues, opulence, all passed under the fatal level of the guillotine: there were seen in the same tumbril Bailly and Gustines, Malesherbes and Delaborde, Lavoisier and Westermam, Elisa¬ beth and Vergniaud. Nothing was spared: there was seen to dis¬ appear under the scythe of the triumphant Illuminated all that there was of majestic and of sublime; there remained only the black band ...

« I shall be asked, upon this hypothesis, wh-

y the Grand Master of the Chapter of Paris ^ and his acolytes, after having overthrown the throne, themselves perished upon the scaffold! I shall answer by a proven fact: after their triumph, the illuminated divi¬ ded^; one part withdrew to the Jacobins and the other to the Convention: The Jacobins dominated until the 9 thermidor; it was then that Camille Desmoulins, Hébert, Chaumette, Clootz and the Grand Master of the Chapter were dragged to the torment. The latter denied his father in vain at the tribune of the Jacobins, and protested in vain that his mother had prostituted her bed; it was known whither his wishes tended: it was to betray the sect; he was delivered to the headsman.(pp. 181-183).

« The earth would present but a vast heap of rubble and of ruins, if Providence had not raised up

all at once a man.whom fortune called to the

highest destinies, and whose fall, however desired it was bound to be, has plunged Europe back into an incalculable series of Revolutions. The famous da1 Philippe-Égalité.

2 The publicist of 1819 is not alone in his opinion: « Philippe (says on his side Cadet de‘ Gassicourt), Philippe had exhausted his coffers, and his ambition undid him. After the death of the king, for which he had himself voted, he thought to seize the reins of the State; he would have succeeded, doubtless, but the initiates divided. The loss of the Bourbons, sworn by the Templars, permitted him to govern only by losing his name; he believed it would suffice to renounce it. He denied his father at the tribune of the Jacobins; he protested that his mother, a prostitute, received into her bed a coachman, and that he was the fruit of those unchaste amours. He humbly begged that his name be taken from him andhe took that of Egalité. But Robespierre had already a party... » [Tombeau de Jacques Molay, pp. 47-48.)
