ternary in the sensible world? — Where does Evolu¬ tion end? — What is Nirvana?

In a7iswering without evasion all these questions and some others, we shall show what interpretation a phi¬ losopher initiated into the arcana of the Kabbalah can furnish of the Christian dogmas.

Such is our sole intention — and to close this foreword to a book that claims to trouble the peace of no conscience, we shall surely be excused for transcribing without comment what we wrote in 1886, at the foot of a page where we had been led to speak of the works of Christ: — « Upon that divine mission we think it prudent not to touch here; where Faith begins, perhaps it were fitting that Science should always stop, in order to avoid sad misunderstandings... And each time that, in the course of this rapid study, we must touch upon religious beliefs, let us declare once for all that, in no way competent in matters of Faith, we regard men and facts from the sole point of view of human intelligence and without ever claiming to dog¬ matise ^. »
