Irony of an inexorable destiny! It is into the Bastille * that Jacques Molay and his own were cast upon the iniquitous order of a king of France, when the king of France was the stronger! — Into the Bastille, then a simple town gate, flanked with two towers... And behold that after four centuries and a half of patient and tenebrous machinations, the king of France is in his turn vanquished, proscribed, humiliated, fallen..., and the heirs of Jacques Molay, allpowerful at this hour, relegate him to the damp shadow of their ancient tower; a sinister place, formerly at once barrack and convent, to-day a simple prison: Et nunc, Reges, intelligite ; erudimini^ qui judicatis terrain !

The Monarchy profaned, laid low and brought to nothing.

* « It is by the taking of the Bastille that the Revolution began, and the initiates designated it to the people because it had beene the pri- » son of Jacques Molay. Avignon was the theatre of the greatest atrocities, because it belonged to the pope and because it enclosed the ashes of the Grand Master. All the statues of the kings were thrown down, in order to make disappeare that of Henri IV, which covered the place where Jacques Molay was executed. It is in that same place, and not elsewhere, that the initiates wished to have raised a colossus trampling underfoot crowns and thiaras, and this colossus was but the emblem of the body of theTemplars. » [Tombeau de J. Molay, pages 42-43.)

the Jacobins turn against Catholicism. Ghaumette, Anacharsis Glootz, from the preceding year, had opened the persecution; under Robespierre, it attains its paroxysm. The hatred of the Neo-Templars was not at all sated, at the spectacle of Philippe le Bel punished in the person of Louis XVI; it was needful that poor Pius VII should pay in his turn the terrible debt con¬ tracted by Clément V...

— Factitious comparisons! Specious coincidence of events wholly fortuitous and in no way interdependent! It is an easy thing to establish after the fact a bond of causality between facts that have no other correlation than a vague analogy!... — We hardly dissi¬ mulate from ourselves that the majority of our readers will hold this language, in spite of the fairly notable number of indications at the least singular, that we have taken it upon ourselves to group into a compact sheaf. If nevertheless, opening a book printed before the great revolutionary cataclysms, we should make seen the double plan of that Revolution (anti bourbonnian and anti clerical), settled long since in the lodges of a Masonry which proclaims itself templar, what would those object to our thesis who tax it with being chimerical and, para¬ doxical?

None is ignorant of the trial of Gagliostro, condemned to death by decree of the Inquisition, a penalty which was commuted by the pope into that of perpetual detention. Let us re¬ fer to the Vie de Joseph Balsamo, comte de Gagliostro, extracted from the Procédure instructed against him at Rome, in 1790, translated after the original ita316

lian printed at the apostolic chamber (Paris, 1791, in-8, portrait). Pages 129-132 offer us the detailed recital Gagliostro made before his judges, of his initiation into the mysteries of Illuminism. The scene passes in a country house, three miles from Frankfort-on-the-Main, in 1780. We shall transcri¬ be this textual avowal: «... We descended by fourteen or fifteen steps into a souterrain, and we entered a round chamber, in the midst whereof I saw a table; it was opened, and underneath was an iron chest which was opened also and wherein I perceived a quantity of papers: these two persons* took thence a manuscript book, made in the form of a missal, at the beginning whereof was writ: we,

followed by a formula of oath, conceived in the most horrible ex¬ pressions, which I cannot recol¬ lect, but which contained the engagement to destroy all despotic sovereigns. This formula was written with blood and had eleven signatures, besides my cipher which was the first; the whole likewise written with blood. I cannot recollect all the names of those signatures, save those named N., N., N., etc. These signatures were those of the twelve GrandMasters of the Illuminated; but in truth, my cipher had not been made by me, and I know not how it found itself there. What was said to me upon the content of this book, which was writ in french, and the little I read of it
