Now, while intoxicated, cradled in the charm of these great lords of Occultism, high Pari¬ sian society abandoned itself in their arms, with the vanquished gesture of the woman who gives herself, Saint-Germain, the first, or¬ ganised in silence the uproarious clubs of the morrow and fecundated with his inexhaustible gold the future riot — apt to shake the power of a king by violence; on the other hand and thereafter, the infernal foresight of the divine Gagliostro wove the intrigue of the necklace— apt to ruin the honour and the prestige of a queen, by suspicion.
The Grand Gophta had but to will, in order to intro¬ duce himself into the world of the Court; he was creating at that epoch his Egyptian Masonry, whereof the little princesse de Lamballe accepted the mastership, by express order of Marie Antoinette. Poor queen! Her confidante, her intimate friend was already from that hour marked, stigmatised with the secret sign of Gagliostro: L. P. D., — initials whereof

the interpretation, as though it were a question of a hieroglyph of the Kabbalah, offered three senses. Contrary to what is done in the normal exegesis of esote¬ ric symbols, the hierophant readily delivered the two superior signifi¬ cations: the superlative ^ — Liberty of T hinking — it is the affirmation of independent initiative in the intelligible order; the comparative — Libertyj Power^ Duty — it is the ternary in the moral order. But he dissimulated with care even the existence of the inferior, positive sense: that was the very secret of the Order, the political and social arcanum of the Neo-Templars, the sentence pronounced for near five centuries against the heirs of Philippe le Bel: Lilia pedibus destrue, trample the lilies underfoot.
Let us report, on the subject of this regicide device and in support of its antiquity, a historical anecdote really probative: « The deputy Grégoire presented to the Convention a medal struck in 1642: it offers on one side an arm issuing from the clouds, reaping three lilies with a cutting sword. The legend is: Totem dabit ultio messem (such is the harvest that vengeance shall give). On the reverse, another arm hurls the thunderbolt upon a crown and a broken sceptre, with these words: Flamma metuenda tyrannis (at the aspect of these fires, the tyrants shall tremble^). »

This medal may be seen at the Bibliothèque natio¬ nale, where it has been preserved.
Here further, according to Cadet de Gassicourt, the tran¬ slation of a masonic notice in cipher, which was spr¬ ead by the care of Cagliostro, in France as well as in England: « To all true masons, in the name of Jehovah! the time is come when the construction of the new temple of Jerusalem must be begun. This warning is to invite all the true masons at London to assemble in the name of Jehovah, the only one in which is a divine trinity, to be found to-morrow evening, the 3 of the present the abbé Joachim de Flore (or of Calabria). I possess two latin editions of the abbé Joachim: the one, of 1589 (Venice, in-4), with a frontispiece, an engraved title and 33 figures in line-engraving of a pres¬ cience often stupefying; the other edition is also of Venice (1600, in-4}, ornamented with a frontispiece and with six figures engraved in the form of wheels.
As for the Pronostication of Paracelsus, I possess likewise two copies of it: the one is the unfindable edition of 1536, S.-L. in-4, latin text, with 32 figures more astonishing still. Here is the exact title: Prognostieatio eximii Doetoris Theophrasti Paraeelsi (ad illustrissimum ac potentissimum Principem Ferdinandum Romanorum Regem, etc..., anno 1536). The other copy is a very fine original manuscript, containing an unpublished french translation by Ghristallin (librarian of the Comte de Charolois), written in his own hand (latin text facing), with a pseudo-key which con¬ sists in 32 notices of rash adaptation to the events of the reign of Louis XIV. This precious manuscript is dated 1712 (three years before the death of the Great King). Format in-4, binding in old calf, ornamented on the boards with the arms of the prince de Condé; the back, sown with fleurs de lys and radiating suns, marks the epoch and carries us back to the reign of Louis XIV:
« Sun-King, fecundating the lilies full-blown. »
I give a fac-simile specimen of the prophetic engravings of Paracelsus and of Joachim.
A PROPHECY of JOACHIM of FLORA: Confii>sio & Error vitiabitur. ( Vaticinium xix )
Upon two columns of unequal size rise the Symbols of the two Powers, pontifical and royal. From a third column ( less elevated than the two others ), issues an arm armed with a scythe which menaces these two Powers.
