1Truth 2 88 MAN my soul shall invoke the Lord, may he ever be ready to hear me and to answer me! Prayers of the Lord, you penetrate my bones, you take hold of all my members; you surround me with your sweet and life-giving influences, as one wraps an infirm man, to preserve him from the keen air. Thanks be rendered unto you! Do not suspend your cares, until I have recovered my strength. My eyes, you shall become piercing, like those of the eagle. My thought shall be like the arrow, which the warrior takes long to aim, and without hurrying, so that it may strike a surer blow. At every moment of his life, man needs to save himself; thus he has seen enter into his abysses a universal Deliverer, who never rests. A Deliverer, who can be none other than God himself, without which he could not have restored my life; because, had he not himself been the root of my being, in reuniting me to himself he would not thereby have reunited me to my root. Human soul, unite thyself to him who has brought upon the earth the power to purify all substances; unite thyself to him who, being God, makes himself known only to the simple and to the little, and lets himself remain unknown to the learned. What need hast thou to solicit the particular aid of all the agents of truth? Are they not all contained within her, are they not all animated by her universal influence?
2T 289 Holy Truth, speak to the soul of man; he shall understand every language, and shall not be crushed beneath the terrible weight of time. If I am one of thy thoughts, grant me, for the glory of thy name, the strength to justify my origin. If I have let the treasures of my divine essence become tarnished, if some branches have, through my weakness, become detached from that great tree; command them to be reborn, and they shall rise up with even greater majesty than when thou first gavest them birth? It is thou who preventest souls from destroying one another; and it is thou who healest them, when they have wounded themselves, and who raisest them from the dead, when they have destroyed themselves. It is thou who leavest the impious within his bonds, so long as he does not turn back toward thee, and persists in declaring himself thine enemy. Oh, how many men are within the way without knowing it! How many others believe themselves within the way, while they are so far from it! Wait in peace and in silence. Withdraw into the cave of Elijah, until the glory of the Lord shall have passed. Which among you would be worthy to contemplate it? It is not to feeble man that the glory of the Lord is promised; before he may enjoy it, the thought of man must have recovered its elevation. For
3290 0 MAN it is within the thought of man that the glory of the Lord is found. The heavens likewise proclaim it, that glory, and David has told us so in his canticles; but they do no more than proclaim it, whereas the thought of man justifies it, proves it, and demonstrates it. One day, the heavens, the earth, and the universe shall cease to be, and shall no longer be able to proclaim the glory of God. When that day shall have arrived, the thought of man shall still be able to justify it, to prove it, to demonstrate it, and that throughout the duration of all the eternities. Consider that, if you never abandoned a pure and true thought, without its being carried to a living and effective end, you would insensibly re-establish yourselves within your law, and you would become, even here below, the representatives of your God. WHY dost thou give thyself over to mixed and inferior impressions? Why dost thou descend upon the steps of the abyss? And they are tranquil within that darkness! and the transports of a senseless joy come even to take hold of them! These places of darkness are worse than the raging seas. When the vessel has descended as though into gulfs, does it not rise again upon the crest of the waves? But here there is no alternative: the gulfs are always
