1282 0 MAN It is because it belongs essentially to his love, and because, could we but know the immensity of that love, there would remain nothing in God hidden from us. I rose before day to offer my vows to the Eternal. I took that peaceful moment when men, given over to sleep, seem buried as though within the tomb, in order to resurrect my thought there. That moment is the most favorable for prayer and for uniting oneself to truth. The atmosphere is not agitated by the vain words of men, nor by their idle or vicious occupations. Mortals, is it not only in the silence of your thought that the peace of nature can be found! Supreme God, why dost thou leave any longer, within this muddy earth, him who loves thee, who seeks thee, and whose soul has tasted thy life! My hands rise up toward thee: it seems to me that thou dost stretch out thine own to me; it seems that my heart swells with thy fire; it seems that all that is within my being is no longer anything but one with thee thyself. I traverse, within thy spirit, all those holy regions, where the works of thy wisdom and of thy power spread a dazzling brightness, at the same time that they fill the soul with blessedness. Alas! the sun surprises me; a vapor of fire, inflaming the horizon, announces to the world this tabernacle of light. It comes to reanimate slumbering nature; it
2283 comes to enlighten the eyes of my body, and to offer me the spectacle of all the objects that surround me. Stop: thou dost not bring me a real good, if thou dost not come to open still further the eyes of my spirit. Stop, since, on the contrary, thou comest to close them. Thou wilt offer me only mortal images of those immortal beauties my thought has just contemplated. Thou wilt hide from me the eternal sun of which thou art but a pale and almost extinguished reflection. Stop: for with thee shall awaken the thoughts of men; the ambitious audacity of the impious, and the fabricators of iniquity. With thee shall arise the powers of the world, to bend the nations beneath their yoke of iron, instead of recalling them to the sweet law of truth. With thee all the poisons shall exhale and fill the atmosphere with infection. LET US FOLLOW him within all the ways he shall wish to trace for us. To the elect he has chosen, he marks out paths and types to represent, for the advancement of the universal family. They are separated from us by their election, and they are so likewise by their actions. How should we judge them? Simple and ignorant men will one day see the depth and the height of these fundamental columns. As for you, unhappy judges of what you were not worthy to contemplate, you will wish to be able to make
32§4 MAN yourselves forget your judgments. You will wish to be able to erase them with your tears; and your tears will not erase them. Your writings propagate the ills, and you can no longer set them right. You have to weep, both for the ills you have done, and for those you must do until the end of the ages. Who shall be powerful enough to bring forth a new plague within the land of Egypt, and to cause all the writings of unregenerate man to be found, at that instant, gnawed by worms, or consumed by flames, or turned into dust! I do not except my own, though they are not against the spirit: but I would have the hope that the spirit would take their place, were it itself to send this plague; and my desire is that the spirit take the place of all things. The Lord has bent his gaze upon the posterity of man, and has seen those who seek him. Who is this man broken with sorrow, and groaning over his iniquities? Who is this man humble and in the poverty of wisdom, and asking of all powerful beings to relieve his poverty? I have seen him from the height of my throne, I have seen him in his sadness and in his dejection. My heart was moved. I wrapped myself in my glory, and I descended toward him. I laid my hands upon his head and upon his heart. He has come forth from his state of death; warmth has circulated through his limbs.
