1OF DESIRE. 237 ills of the earth. My soul would become so absorbed in its sorrow, that it would no longer know the peace of its God, and that it would take the reign of death for the eternal reign of unity. But I shall not always keep my eyes lifted toward the heavens. My joys would be so vivid and so abundant, that my soul would forget that there exist ills, and that I would become as one estranged from the sorrows of my brothers. Why have we acquired the knowledge of good and evil? We cannot escape this decree of justice. We could not sustain here below pure and continual joy. We could not sustain, either, absolute evil without interval. If the sun were always upon our horizon, it would consume us. If it never appeared, our earth would soon become a dead mass, where sterility and nothingness would extend their empire. l6z. I HAVE cut off and broken myself a portion of the inheritance thou didst offer me with such largesse. Pay my debt. If I have done them harm by my iniquities, do them good by thy love. I have only thanks to render thee, and pardons to ask of thee. When I shall have been healed of my own ills, and when I shall have healed those of my brothers, it is then that the name of the Lord will cause to be reborn within me the golden bough, and that he will give my arm the power to close the abyss.
2238 0 MAN Fabled heroes, you went yourselves, according to your poets, to take your triumphant arms from the hands of your imaginary Divinities! Then I shall intone the sacred hymn that the Angels of peace sing without ceasing in the holy city; that hymn, whose sounds have resounded from Zebulun even unto Judah; because the star of Jacob came to reunite the two peoples and the two kingdoms. Alas, if man remained always a child, evil would never have any hold upon him, nor upon his thought. He would grow up peacefully in wisdom. He would become there as elevated and as sturdy as the oak is among the other trees of the forest. It is thou, faithful friend, who wouldst fight for him, and, so to speak, without his knowledge. If, in order to fulfill his law, he has an indispensable combat to wage, he would see the evil, but he would not know it within his heart. His heart would always be in innocence, while his arm and his word would be the terror of the enemy. Holy word, grant me to recover the age of my childhood; because, the more man defiles himself, the more he becomes weak and, as it were, the prey of thy adversaries. Upon the summit of these marvelous edifices, raised at such great cost, and which display so much magnificence, I have seen nature humble man by the very simplest productions.
3239 Upon these fruits of the summit, I saw it, producing a blade of grass, the lightest moss, and by that single work effacing all the works and all the pride of humans. The lily is better clothed than was Solomon, in all his glory. Man, when wilt thou open thine eyes upon these puerile marvels that come forth from thy hands! Thou canst effect only transpositions, whereas the works of nature are continual creations. Everywhere it pursues its own work, and never notices thine. What does it matter to it, that thou transposest all substances? Have the pearl and the diamond acquired any further glory, for having come forth from their dwelling and having come to be placed upon the diadem of kings? Yet if, in these usages and in these conventions of luxury, thy understanding perceived traces of what awaits man of truth one day! If thou couldst rise even to the idea of those magnificent temples, which man of peace will inhabit in ages to come, and where a gold purer than that of the earth, and precious stones more transparent than the diamond, will be as the eternal signs of his glory and of his virtues! Awake, resume the titles of thy superiority over nature itself; thy fragile works will disappear, and the marvels of the whole universe gathered together will not equal a single one of thy true works. Canst thou not act under the eye of thy God! Let nature remain in silence, it knows
