1P 4 231 transmitting light and life to thy fellow men here below, thou dost not even manage to preserve thyself from darkness and from death. God of peace, when we give ourselves over to prayer, why do we feel that crime and all its traces withdraw from us? Is it not because you are merciful enough no longer to remember it? Is it not because the eye of your love, in turning upon us, brings, at the same time, the life that can regenerate even unto death? Whatever crimes we may have committed, let us never despair of obtaining healing from them, provided we resolve to ask for it. Our humiliation, our repentance, help develop the glory and tenderness of our heavenly Father, and these are among his supreme attributes. Without the confession of our faults, punishment no longer resembles justice; it resembles barbarity. Without the confession of our faults, pardon no longer resembles grace; it resembles caprice. After the first crime, guilty man addressed himself directly to God; after the second crime, he could address himself only to the spirit. When they descend below the spirit, there are not even stones that would not be ready to hear the confession of their crimes. Are these not the very stones of which the Lord said that from them there could be raised up even children unto Abraham? The way of peace is everywhere open for man; it descends with him into all the abysses where he
2232 1 0 MAN plunges: and you would wish to make a particular religion, as though the true religion were not universal and of all nations! WHAT is the picture that material nature presents to us? Substances in seed, substances in vegetation, substances in production. What are the means men have of communicating with one another? Writing, when they are separated; speech, when they can hear one another; action, when they see one another. The friend who gives us thought, why would it not follow all these progressions? Why would it not contain substances in seed, substances in vegetation, substances in production? Everything is a picture in the works of thought. It never presents itself to us except under a sensible form; because everything is complete in the source that produces it. This sensible form is its writing. But one writes only when one is separated! These are the substances in seed. Can we not hear the voice of men in the midst of darkness, and without seeing them! These are the substances in vegetation... But there is a third degree! but we see men act, when they are near us and the light shines upon them! These are the substances in production,
3/ 233 It is therefore true that we write to men, that we speak to them, that we act before them, even though they perceive it so little; just as it is true that all these things happen materially before children, who perceive it no more. Truth, truth, who could love anything other than thee! It seems that in the sacred dwellings destined for holy ceremonies, there is an invisible power, which carries within itself an efficacious and salutary character, and which imprints itself upon all the beings found within those precincts. Do you not feel the passions calm themselves there, the spirit grow clearer, the heart grow warmer? The things of the world sink there into their nothingness. The rays of truth there fill us with vivid lights and joys that could not be depicted. Do you not feel, even, that you come out of it, pitying men, and more disposed to love them, whereas you had perhaps entered it tearing and hating them in your heart. It is because prayer makes its dwelling in these sanctuaries, and because, despite the iniquity of men, it is stronger than their weakness. It is because it there continually purifies the atmosphere, and you share in its purity, as soon as you approach its influences. However distinguished a genius may be, even amid
