10 MAN with the tiara, and he will take up the sword to combat the enemies of the Lord. He will place his glory in delivering the captives, and in purifying the elements and guilty man. This is why, when at his command the fishermen shall have cast the net on the right side, they will catch one hundred and fifty-three large fish. Woe to him who, after having been enlightened in the spirit, and purified in the pool, lets himself fall into faults unworthy of the spirit! That is to wound oneself in the spirit, that is to submit life to death. That is to give death to life. He will then be obliged to walk for a long time ahead of the spirit, whereas before it was the spirit that walked ahead of him. WHAT is the thought of the spirit of the Lord? It is the soul of man; it is that immortal being, in whom all the divine rays are gathered. What is the thought of the active and creative powers of nature? It is the animal soul. It is that instantaneous substance, in which all the productive, sensitive, and vegetative powers act in concert. What is the thought of the immortal soul of man? It is that glorious chariot, upon which it rests, which it ought to animate with its fire, and which one day must make it soar in glory. What is the thought of the animal soul? It is the material body? It is that mixed production, subject to
2P 3 229 decompose; because the various principles that concur in constructing it can also divide and suspend their action, when the center that binds them withdraws. What is the thought of the glorious chariot, where the immortal soul of man rests? It is an operation of life; because it belongs to a progression, which always goes from simple actions to simple actions. What is the thought of the material body? It is an operation of death; because, belonging to a root that is not simple, the more its results propagate, the more they divide and weaken. And it is through these corruptible and fragile channels that truth, love, light, and life do not fear to pass! Human thought, gather together the worlds, gather together all the spirits, gather together the weight of everything that has received existence: you will never be able, through that, to obtain the means of evaluating the love of your God. I have a vast picture to consider. The Restorer transfigured himself before the eyes of three of his elect. He unfolded, before them, the seed of primitive man. He made known to them the splendor of that glorious form, with which we would all have been clothed, had we followed the plan of our origin; and he showed them the goal. If men had been more ready to return to the truth, if all humanity had not thrown itself
3230 0 MAN beneath the yoke of matter and of darkness, that glorious form would have remained in its splendor, and would have raised up man by the force of its attraction. But the weight of crime caused it to withdraw again into its thick covering, and it had to come forth once more by violence, since it had come forth in vain through charity. The earth did not tremble at this transfiguration; the heavens were not darkened; the dead did not come forth from their tombs, and did not walk about in the streets of Jerusalem, to terrify its inhabitants. It was love alone, it was the last attempt of love, still trying whether it could do without justice. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often have I wished to gather thy children, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings; and thou wouldst not! Apart from crimes, from defilements, or from culpable negligences, what does man offer upon the earth? What an abyss is his sojourn! What cruelty in his manner of repaying the benefits of God! What continual suicide for his soul, is his conduct! O man, may the supreme hand snatch thee from this cesspool and from this ever-open precipice! Instead of
