1225 FIXED unity, variable unity, composite unity: these are the three quaternaries that embrace the universality of beings. This is why everything that has received existence bears the imprint of the first being; and the image of each principle is always near that principle, to represent it. Powerful God, who could contemplate thy glory, if thou didst not envelop thyself in the spirits who are thy image? Thy servant Moses saw them, these powers, which accompany thee, which follow thee, and which come after thee. For is this not the meaning of that word Akarim, which the holy tongue has transmitted to us? Does not the understanding find support in the picture of these powers, which thou precedest, which go forth from thee, and which come after thee? What, then, are we to think of those cold translations, which have painted for us so ridiculously the manner in which Moses saw God? There is but one primitive word. This is why the true etymology would teach everything. Wisdom, excuse their ignorance, and prove the truth to them even in this world. There is always a moment in life when man sees it, this truth, not only through the heart, but through the eyes. Happy is he to whom thou grantest to profit from it! Knowledge will become useless to him. Do we not see everywhere force, and, as it were, an obstinacy of power? P
2.220 1’ H 0 M M E It is because everything is alive, even that which is dead; and this is what shows how much older the reign of unity is than that of confusion. Science is swift 5 like time; changeable, like Proteus; mobile, like the spirit. What, then, can be your hope, you learned men, who claim to explain its monuments? What you discover for one era, could it suit the following era? Kircher wished to explain the Egyptian hieroglyphs, and the Isiac table. What has he taught us? If these monuments are the fruit of wisdom, study first what wisdom is, so as to be able afterward to discover its connection with them. But this true notion of wisdom, do not pursue it through ordinary researches; they have not yet made it be encountered. If these monuments are the fruit of ambition, of ignorance, and of bad faith, they deserve nothing more than your disdain. Unhappy men, you seem to have no other aim than to find, for things, an explanation that dispenses you from the true one. How long will you kick against the goad? Your sciences, your libraries are, for the spirit of man, what pharmacies are for his body. Both the one and the other do nothing but work against his light, his strength, and his health.
3P 2 OF DESIRE. 227 They serve sometimes to mitigate his ills, more often to increase them even unto death; rarely to cure them, and never to render him invulnerable. Let every man write, if he wishes; that can help him to form his mind. But let no one read; that scarcely ever serves except to deform it. Especially when writers, more jealous of our approval than of our advancement, fear to give work to our thought; and, in order to reign over us, think only of keeping it in infancy, and of not letting its forces develop. O holy truth, what hast thou become among men? Art thou not that temple, of which the Savior said that not one stone would remain upon another? Cast the net on the right side of the boat, if you wish to find nourishment. Do not confine yourselves to plunging man into the pool. Let all the waters of life, of the way, and of truth penetrate him, and follow one another within him without interruption. They will rise and descend within him, like Jacob's ladder. By dint of treading with their feet, they will level the way; and the victor will be able to march in triumph along the path prepared by the steps of his army. Let us contemplate man thus emerged from the pool. He is about to be clothed in garments more radiant than the sun. He is about to put on the robe of justice; his head will be covered
