1nant pour racine, ce qui n’est que puissance , & ne voulant prendre que pour puissance , ce qui est racine. Ils se sont crus auteurs de la parole , parce qu’ils ont vu parmi eux les langues naître des débris les unes des autres. Ils n’ont pas pressenti, pourquoi dans les productions de leur génie, ils trouvoient tant d’avantage à personnifier toutes les qualités morales, bonnes ou mauvaises , & même tous les êtres physiques. Ils. ont déshonoré la poësie, & ont insulte à notre intelligence , ayant l’air d’être inspirés par des muses, pendant qu’ils ne prenoient leurs inspirations que dans leur mémoire, ou dans tous les objets qui nous environnent, & que nous pouvons observer comme eux. Ils semblent tous occupés à ravager les moissons qui devroient les nourrir, & à ne cultiver que les poisons qui les corrompent. Oh, vérité ! répète ici, ce que tu fis dire à Isaïe sur les Hébreux prévaricateurs : Où frapperai - je ? Ce peuple nej que plaie de la tête aux pieds. Il n’y a pas un seul endroit vif où la verge de correction puijfe se faire sentir. Je ne chercherai plus à découvrir la nature du crime primitif. La charité du Réparateur me la fait connoître. Aime^- vous les uns les autres, jusquà donner votre vie pour vos frères. Soye^ uns avec lui, comme il est un avec son Père. Cet Être n’est venu que pour balancer la masse d'iniquités;

1for root what is only power, and wishing to take for power only what is root. They have believed themselves the authors of speech, because they have seen, among themselves, languages born from the ruins of one another. They have never suspected why, in the productions of their own genius, they found such an advantage in personifying every moral quality, good or bad, and even every physical being. They have dishonored poetry, and insulted our understanding, having the air of being inspired by muses, while drawing their inspirations only from their own memory, or from all the objects that surround us, which we can observe just as they can. They all seem occupied with ravaging the harvests that ought to nourish them, and with cultivating only the poisons that corrupt them. Oh, truth! repeat here what thou didst make Isaiah say of the transgressing Hebrews: Where shall I strike? This people is nothing but a wound from head to foot. There is not a single living spot where the rod of correction can make itself felt. I shall seek no more to discover the nature of the primal crime. The charity of the Restorer makes it known to me. Love one another, even to giving your life for your brethren. Be one with him, as he is one with his Father. This Being came only to counterbalance the mass of iniquities;
2223 he shows us its weight in equal measure; he has only changed its substance. If the weight the Restorer brought is unity and the love of others, that which he came to counterbalance is division and the love of self. 8 Thou didst love thyself alone, principle of iniquity. Thou didst cease to love within unity; and from that time thy faculties were perverted, though thy essence remains incorruptible. Manicheans, cease believing in the necessity of two co-eternal principles; you go astray at every step you take, if you do not acknowledge one free being produced by one necessary Being. Let us celebrate the greatness of man, for whom a work was wrought such as none like it was ever wrought in Israel. It is because God is the goal of man within the heavens, that man was the goal of God upon the earth. What teaches us this truth? Follow, through your understanding, the course of his own operations. They were not complete, until he had initiated himself even into the depths of the heart of man. Ours will not be complete, until we are initiated, through our own love, even into the depths of the heart of God. Multiply a dead power, like matter? you weaken it. A living power, on the contrary, to whatever degree it is raised, always remains intact, and manifests its activity all the more.
315 2. 224 L’ H 0 M M E Laws of calculation, you are the image of living things. The generative term of every numerical power never undergoes alteration, though it produces the immensity of beings. Are we not driven to measure everything, to weigh everything, to calculate everything? Are we not made to swim within the infinite, since we were born there? Having acquired and tasted a few virtues, can we not acquire and taste new ones? And this without term, without end, like numbers, like the Eternal, who is ever new, ever engendering himself from his own essence, and yet ever the same within his living and life-giving action? Weight, or fullness, is found within the principles and the action of every region. Measure is scattered throughout time; and number ferments, like fire, within the seeds of every being. Could there be a weight, a measure, and a number for evil? It could only be an incomplete weight, a false measure, and an uncertain number. Without this, evil would have a sure means of conquering good, or at least of combating it and equaling itself to it. Man, weigh thyself with thy works, measure thyself against the degrees of thy reconciliation; number thyself upon the liveliness of thy faith, and upon the ardor of thy love. Hope for nothing, if thou hast not made thy heart divine. This is why one must never speak of wisdom except to those who have already sought it. Those who have believed they could do without it are unfit for it.
