1O 3 213 It is because, in our own works, just as in magnetic works, the spirit of the prophet is not furnished to the prophet; That the prophet is not only furnished to his own spirit, but is furnished as well to the human hand that directs that spirit without knowing it, and which may itself be directed, unknowingly, by an infinity of various powers. And these imprudent men still glory in the works they thus perform through the hand of others! whereas the men of God, the greater the wonders they work through their own gifts and their own powers, the more they humble themselves and prostrate themselves in the sense of their own unworthiness. Let us not take such pains to adorn our words of instruction, and to render them imposing through so studied a culture. Were they all-sublime words, they would profit nothing from them, the unhappy men! they have not profited from the living and universal word. And yet what was lacking to that living word? The Judaic name was the letter, the new name was the spirit. What word could you find comparable to that word? They are rare, those who occupy themselves with opening their being to the inward sense of their sublime relations with
2214 L’ H 0 M M E their own principle. There is only this class of men who know how to draw forth the fire of the word. Begin each day, like the prophet, by exterminating every sinner upon the earth, and by destroying, within the city of the Lord, every fabricator of iniquity. The first degree of wisdom is the fear of God; the second, faith in every virtue; the third, the love of universal and particular man; the fourth, the love of the sovereign Being and of his spirit. This is how we shall come to make the fire of his word shine forth. Would it be through the care and the ornamentation of our words that the accomplishment of so great a work should depend! Storms shake the trees; they rub their branches against one another, and thereby drive out the insects and every harmful creature, which would have stung the seeds, and prevented them from bearing fruit. Thus the law of time, and the convulsions of our stormy region, strip us, one through another, of everything foreign and harmful to our true growth. David, thou wast filled with these truths, when thou didst bear the curses of Shimei, and didst prevent Abishai from taking his life. Perhaps, thou didst say, the Lord will look upon my
3O 4 215 affliction, 6 and it will be some good for me from these curses I receive today. There is a cup still more bitter; it is that which we drink for other men, and for the enormity of evil. The knowledge of its elements and of its properties is beyond us. Because this general and central cup falls upon our very principle and upon our own center, since it likewise proceeds from the supreme center, or from the living hearth of love and of charity. Whoever thou art, if thou drinkest from this general cup, do not complain. There is a sorrow that leads to death, that of the world and of folly; but there is a sorrow that leads to life, and that is the sorrow of wisdom and of truth. What mother is not filled with joy, and does not forget all her pains, when she has brought a man into the world? When the sword of the Lord has slain within us the ancient serpent, then it enlarges the tents of Israel. Let us open our souls to the sword of the Lord; it is that which must separate the foreign nations from us. Without it, we remain always among the ranks of the uncircumcised. Oh, how terrible and how great man is, when his unity has come! Why should he be born with so vivid a sense of his superiority over all of nature? Banish from within thee every doubt and every fear
