1162 MAN all are called to the common measure; and it is this measure that you falsify through your inexperience and through your vicious generations. Where does human posterity now stand? where is the peace that ought to result from this common measure? Are not every harmony broken? Is not everything in distress? And are those beings, whom wisdom had placed together upon the earth, to quicken one another, doing anything there but wounding and completing the disordering of their own measure! In vain I wish to open my mouth to sing the canticles of the Lord: tears flood me, sobs choke me, my voice fails, and my throat grows dry from the length of my sorrow. Are you like that unfortunate being who, through having so long dwelt within iniquity, has come at last to regard it as natural! IOO. Because the knowledge of the essence of the Being is forbidden, they believed that the knowledge of his laws was forbidden too; and because the knowledge of the laws of the Being was recommended to us, they believed that the knowledge of his essence was permitted. This is what has made the ignorant and the impious. The man who is bound to action is within his law, because the thought that governs him never leaves him. The man who gives himself over to thought alone is not
2L 2 163 within his law, because action is lacking there to complete it. So, what greater proof of the weakness of man is there than the multiplicity of his words! what does he accomplish through them? and, on the contrary, what would he not accomplish with the simple word? Divine action, it is in combining thyself with time that thou dost repair the disorders of humanity. As the young shoots grow beneath the eyes of man, the keepers of truth grow there at the same time, and extend the reign that truth ought to have within the universe. The angels of children behold the face of God; the angels of our fellow men behold ours, and put to flight the evil angels we have let ourselves be accompanied by. It is almost a shame to man to be no more than the elect of time, since all may hold that hope; whereas, were he pure and watchful, he might enter among the number of the chosen elect. Why are we no longer elect by origin? can we no longer go into Egypt, as Joseph did, to make it share in the covenant. Can we no longer go there to exhume the bones of our fathers! Let us begin by exhuming our own, and by tearing ourselves free from the snares of the Egyptians. Then we shall carry the bones of our fathers, out of that plague-stricken land, into the land of promise; and we shall sing the canticle of their deliverance.
3L’ H 0 M M E IOI, Whence shall I take a true idea of prayer, and of the effects it can produce? It is my sole resource, my sole duty, my sole work, within this shadowy region and upon this wretched stage of expiation. It can purify and sanctify my garments, my food, my possessions, the substance of my sacrifices 2, every act and every subjection of my being. I can, through my prayer, reach even to those higher spheres, of which the visible spheres are but imperfect images. Still more, if there appears before me a man whose words or whose faults distress me, I can, through prayer, recover an interest in him, in place of the estrangement he would otherwise have caused me. I can, through my prayer, cause the impious man to become religious, the wrathful man to become gentle, the unfeeling man to fill himself with charity. I can, through my prayer, revive virtue everywhere. I can, through my prayer, descend even into the places of darkness and of sorrow, and bring some relief there. Was it not prayer that once made the lame walk, gave sight to the blind, and hearing to the deaf? Was it not prayer that raised the dead? I must expect everything from God, without doubt; but to expect everything from God is not to remain in apathy and passivity. It is to entreat him, through my own activity and through
