Ce lieu d’attente ne peut-il pas se regarder comme leur état d’enfance ? & lorsqu’elles en sortent, n’est - ce pas pour s’élever à un état plus parfait ; & pour se réunir un jour , si elles en sont dignes , au souverain Être, dont le péché les a séparées ? Homme terrestre & corporel, ta loi est semblable. Justice suprême, quand le premier des hommes eut péché, tu le condamnas au travail & à la mort ; mais tu ne condamnas point son corps aux souffrances , ni son esprit à des égaremens & à des absences. La femme seule fut condamnée à souffrir, & seulement dans les lois de la génération , parce qu’elle est chargée de tirer l’homme de l’abyme, comme c’est elle qui l’y a précipité : Et malgré le juste anathème, qui fut lancé sur l’homme & la. femme, ils auroient pu ne sortir de ce monde qu’en s’élevant dans les airs sur un char de feu , comme Elie. Est-ce, parce que vous ne voyez pas l’homme s’améliorer, ni les vices diminuer sur la terre, que vous doutez de la pureté de votre origine ? Mais ne faut-il pas que toute la postérité humaine passe par les filières de la renaiiTance & de la restauration, & qu’elle soit plongée dans le lac ? Ne vous étonnez plus qu’ils se fouillent tous dans cette fange ? tous sont si neufs & si étrangers pour elle , quand ils y arrivent, qu’ils ne savent pas se préserver de son infection. Mais l’Orient est toujours pur; saisissez seulement le bord de son vêtement, & vous serez comme invisible aux yeux des méchans. C’est pour lui qu'lsaïe disoit: Nous Pavons vu; son vif âge étoit comme caché, sans nulle apparence , sans beauté, & nous ré avons point fait attention à lui. Comment les hommes riches & heureux l'aperce- vroient-ils ? Ne sont-ils pas comme enveloppés & comme aveuglés par les nuages de la prospérité ? Il veille au milieu des ténèbres ; il veille à la conservation du peuple , & l’âme de l’homme pur veille avec lui dans tous les siècles & dans tous les âges. Ne dites point que vous n’avez point d’huile ; les. champs sont remplis d’oliviers , & vous-mêmes pouvez vous regarder comme les cultivateurs du jardin d'Eden. Oui, vous pouvez attacher à vos enfans une réaction de luxure, une réaction de cupidité, une réaction de dépravation horrible ; comme vous pouvez y attacher une réaction de pureté, une réaction de sagesse , une réaction de justice. Vous les verrez se manifester dans l’âme de l’enfant, à mesure que les époques de sa croissance physique & de son développement moral arriveront. Mesure malheureuse, mesure nulle & vide, tu peux faire le tourment d’un homme , tant qu’il respire ici-bas. Tu le mets dans le cas du précepte de l’Evangile : Celui qui ne hait pas son père , sa mère, ses frères, ses sœurs > nef pas digne de moi. Mais sa position est sausse , parce qu’elle vient de vous. Could not this place of waiting be regarded as their state of infancy? and when they leave it, is it not to rise to a more perfect state; and to be reunited, one day, if they are worthy of it, with the sovereign Being, from whom sin had separated them? Earthly and corporeal man, thy law is similar. Supreme justice, when the first of men had sinned, thou didst condemn him to labor and to death; but thou didst not condemn his body to suffering, nor his spirit to wanderings and to absences. But must not all human posterity pass through the channels of rebirth and of restoration, and be plunged into the lake? Marvel no longer that they all wallow within this mire? All are so new and so strange to it, when they first arrive there, that they do not know how to preserve themselves from its infection. But the Orient is always pure; seize only the hem of his garment, and you shall be, as it were, invisible to the eyes of the wicked. He watches in the midst of darkness; he watches over the preservation of the people, and the soul of the pure man watches with him through every age and every century. Say not that you have no oil; the fields are filled with olive trees, and you yourselves can regard yourselves as the tillers of the garden of Eden. Yes, you can attach to your children a reaction of lust, a reaction of greed, a reaction of horrible depravity; just as you can attach to them a reaction of purity, a reaction of wisdom, a reaction of justice. You shall see them manifest themselves within the soul of the child, as the seasons of his physical growth and of his moral development arrive. Wretched measure, empty and worthless measure, thou canst be the torment of a man, so long as he breathes here below. It sets him within the case of the precept of the Gospel: He who does not hate his father, his mother, his brothers, his sisters, is not worthy of me. But his position is false, because it comes from you. The precept applies only to those who are chosen: and even then it must be understood in a milder sense.
