1150 MAN It will spread its rays over every path of our journey, like a torch that lights and suddenly appears in the midst of the tombs. My earthly life, however much thou mayst be the tomb of my spirit, I shall never doubt that I existed before coming upon this stage of expiation. Do I remember the time I spent within my mother's womb? or that spent in the cradle and at the breast, until the moment the first traces of thought made themselves felt within me? These times are for me as though they had never been. Am I any less certain of having existed throughout all these moments that are lost to my memory? My ignorance, then, will prove nothing against the times that preceded my earthly life, and I shall always remember that matter has power over spirit, even to the point of serving it as darkness. Man, if thou didst love the light, how thou wouldst defend thyself against the matter that surrounds thee! If thou dost not let thyself be darkened by it, thou wilt see, after thy death, everything that has happened, and everything that will happen, in both worlds. Without this, thou wilt only feel it, thou wilt see nothing; and every faculty left to thee will be exercised only for thy torment. 92. Woe to the world, because of scandals! but there had to be scandals! There had to be contact between the enemy and man, since man had rushed toward the enemy!
2151 Beneficent hand, thou didst come and place thyself between the one and the other; thou didst let thyself be bruised, to keep man from being too greatly bruised himself. Thou camest only to save what was lost. Thou hast often let innocent men lose their lives, to serve as an instruction to the guilty. What were those Galileans, whose blood Pilate mingled with their sacrifices? What were those eighteen men who were crushed by the tower of Siloam? They lost the life of their bodies: but thine eyes were open upon their divine soul; and the account of their tragic death led the people to repentance. And that man born blind, who was not so for his own sins, nor for the sins of his fathers, but who was meant to serve as a manifestation of thy glory; what was he? Thou goest further still, inexhaustible Wisdom: thou often lettest the ignorance and the darkness of man work against man himself; and man almost always advances man, even at the very moment he strives to harm him or to hold him back. The criminal who has done nothing to his executioners could tell them that it is unjustly that they torment him, since he has done them no wrong; but he feels that it is justly that he is given over to torment and to death. It is thus that our own troubles almost always come to us unjustly, at the hands of our fellow men. But we feel that it is just that we should suffer them, since we ourselves rushed into the region of injustice. 1 K 4
3152 MAN Shall I ask him to be a prophet? shall I ask him to work wonders in his name? shall I ask him to penetrate the secrets of his wisdom? No, Lord, I shall take of thy name only the portion it pleases thee to send me; I shall employ thy name only according to my need. Thou alone dost distribute the bread of the word to thy children, according to their age; thou alone wilt take upon thyself this distribution. Thou alone dost choose the prophets; thou choosest them in the vilest condition, as upon the throne, and at the moment when they least expect it. Amos, thou wast chosen, thou wast taken by the spirit of the Lord, while thou wast leading thy oxen to the fields. Is it the wonders worked in the name of the Lord that bring us near to him? He himself said to those who boasted of having performed them: I know you not. He himself said to his disciples, who had already filled the world with miracles: you have asked nothing yet of my father in my name. And thou, singer of Israel, though thou didst confess before the Lord that he had revealed to thee the hidden and unknown things of his wisdom, thou still didst beg him to wash away thy stains, and didst groan over thine iniquities. I shall ask of him, as thou didst, not to let me languish within the corrupted region, and not to let me become, while still alive, the prey of worms.
