1144 L’ H 0 M M E your understanding with them. But wait until a hand other than your own presents you to their living action. Without this prudence, you cannot conceive into what secondary and perverse mixtures you expose the divine work that must be wrought within your soul. If we have such difficulty receiving only the action of the simple regions when we address ourselves to them, what then must it be when we address ourselves to the composite regions? Let the virtues of man extend beyond himself, and, uniting himself with all the good that surrounds him, let him feel the sweetness of his own existence and of his own life! Let the virtues of man extend beyond himself, and every divine virtue shall enter into him; and he shall be imperceptibly transformed into another being! Without the living organs that sustain him and prepare him, how could he draw near to the Lord, and how could the Lord draw near to him? And if there are many dwellings within the house of the Lord, how could there not be many within the house of man? Happy is he who fills himself with courage and with trust, and whom his past ills and iniquities shall not delay in his work! You ask what is the manner of prayer. Does a sick man ask in what manner he must express his
2K 145 sufferings? Command evil always to depart from thee, as though thou wert regenerated in thy powers. Invoke good always, as though the supreme favors had never abandoned thee. Look no longer upon thyself, whether thou art impure or weak. Cast thine eyes no longer backward, and set thyself no other plan than that of perseverance. Thou canst, through thine own steadfastness, recover what divine goodness had granted thee through thy own nature. Say, then, without ceasing: I command iniquity to flee far from me; I command every natural and spiritual aid to gather around me. I entreat every pure elect to guide me and to protect me. I prostrate myself before him who alone can restore all my relations. Each of his words brings forth a universe; each of his words can set legions of living beings around me: because he never speaks without bringing forth life and pouring it into the souls that seek it. Alas, we can anoint the Lord with our prayer, as that holy woman anointed him with perfumes before his burial! We can make the abode of the tomb less bitter for him. Give a bird to a child; he will tear it to pieces, to learn what is hidden within its body. Have him plant flowers, and he will pull them up every day, to see how they take root.
3146 MAN Childish men, you occupy yourselves with these curious concerns regarding nature, as though you were charged with beginning creation anew. You neglect to study the final laws of this nature, as though it were without purpose, and as though Wisdom, in setting it before your eyes, had not destined it for the advancement of her divine work, and for the improvement of the beings that inhabit it. If God had intended you to know how it forms itself, would it show itself to you fully formed, and would it not shape your own body without your knowledge? Study why things exist, not how they exist; you have the right to make use of them, but you will never have the right to create them anew. When you first took up the lyre, and a skilled hand undertook to teach you to draw sounds from it, were you taught how to build that lyre, by taking apart before you every one of its pieces, so that you might then practice putting them back together? That was not your purpose. Such an occupation would have been misguided. The lyre already existed before your eyes; you could only have spoiled it. Mortals, the harmonious lyre of nature is before you; strive to draw sounds from it, and do not spend your days taking apart its structure. Sacred Word, they do thee injury by their researches, as though they did not know that it is by thy word that everything is created and quickened around them. Would God, then, have lesser powers? and his word
