1K 2 1,47 living and creative — could it not have given being to the totality of worlds, since the feeble word of man gives existence to the totality of his own productions? Spirit of man, if there were no new trials after this earthly passage, wouldst thou not find thy return to truth too easy? Thy punishment too light? the reverence due to the Father of love and of light, too diminished? and too small, the satisfaction due to justice? Is it after having confined thyself to a barren wisdom, without love, without knowledge, and without light, that thou wouldst believe thyself worthy to enter into the dwelling of eternal justice and of holiness? Thy body comes here below, naked as the athletes in the arena. Must not thy soul, too, come forth naked one day, into the region that corresponds to it; and there make its proofs, to be admitted into the ranks of the brave warriors? It is to help us make these proofs gloriously that the lion of Judah and his elect shall be with us until the consummation of the ages. Upon the earth they waged only earthly combat. Since they left it, they fructify souls in the celestial combat, and for every victory they win for those souls, they shall be crowned, at the end of the ages, with immortal laurels.
2MAN Let their example animate thy courage. If thy body received a happy conformation within thy mother's womb, thou canst gather its fruits throughout the whole life of thy flesh. Thy soul is within thy body, as within a mother's womb: but there it can arrange its own conformation as it pleases, and whatever it shall have prepared for itself there must remain with it after its birth — after that birth which matter calls death. Occupy thyself, then, with procuring for thyself a regular conformation, and fill thyself with hope for the reign to come. The most watchful mother is forced to admit that the care she gives her children is as nothing beside that which they receive from Providence at every moment of the day. How couldst thou distrust her love in a more advanced age? Whatever region thou inhabitest, to whatever degree man may rise, whether in this world or in the other, is he not always the child of Providence? The imprudent! how could they have confounded the work of the spirit with the work of matter! Did they not know that the first reason of things produced was double? and did they not see that two is the cause of all generation? Let them join to the number of appearance the number of its principle; they will then have a number that is but
3K 3 14g half of the true number: this is why one sees, in bodies, a universal wasting away, because the same number presides over the birth of matter and over its destruction. Learned men of the hermetic art, deceive us no longer with your mysteries; deceive yourselves no longer with your curative secrets: you do injury to the truth in confounding its work with your own. You are not, I grant, the children of Belial; but, without knowing it, you may resemble them. You can, like them, corrupt the inhabitants of the city, by telling them: come, let us serve the foreign gods that are unknown to you. What is commanded to the chosen people, when they shall have found that this abomination has indeed been committed? You shall put at once to the edge of the sword the inhabitants of that city, 6* and you shall destroy it with everything that shall be found there, even to the animals. Because the power of foreign gods extends throughout every region that is opened to it; and it ravages there everything it encounters, like a torrent 011 whose dikes have been broken. How could we remember what preceded our birth here below? Is not matter the tomb, the boundary, and the darkness of the spirit? After death, how could we not remember our earthly life? Is not the spirit the light of matter?
