1D E l’air, l’air sans l’esprit, l’esprit sans la vie, & la vie sans notre Dieu ? Quelles merveilles & quelles puissances ne sont pas renfermées dans la musique ! Mais qui l’entend cette parole ? Ne sommes-nous pas à son égard, comme dans un désert ? Que sont tous ces discours lascifs ou mensongers, que vous ornez de votre mélodie & de tous les secrets de votre art ? Je ne vois là encore que des sons qui attendent également d’être vivifiés par la parole. Mais si vous l’aviez , cette parole, où feroient les sons que vous emplo iriez pour l’accompagner? Vos frêles ins- trumens pourroient - ils se lier à sa mélodie ? Lisez ici ce qui doit composer vos concerts. L’homme l’avoit reçue , cette parole ; il avoit été choisi pour être le chantre de Dieu & pour en célébrer toutes *. les merveilles. Il avoit été choisi pour rectifier tous les accords dissonans qui ne cherchoient qu’à troubler l’harmonie de la vérité. Etoit-il seul à remplir ce sublime emploi? Non. Vous tous , êtres de la nature , vous deviez mêler vos • sons à ses chants ; c’est vous qui deviez accompagner sa voix céleste. Parcourons l’échelle harmonique que l’homme embrasse dans son cours. A l'instant de sa chute, il devint matière mêlée d’esprit. A la seconde loi, il devint l’esprit mêlé de matière. A la troisième, il devint Tesprit pur. A la quatrième, il deviendra esprit divinisé. Je l’entendrai donc un jour, cet homme divinisé, faisant sortir de sa bouche & de son cœur des chants

Hymne vivifiant, hymne universel , célèbre la puissance & l’amour de l’Eternel , & que l’homme qui chantera ce divin cantique, soit abreuvé des sources de la vie ! Toutes tes religions ont un culte & des cérémonies , toutes les doctrines religieuses ont des pratiques sensibles. Toutes ont des formules actives , auxquelles sont attachées des idées de puissance , qui impriment le respect, & semblent menacer tout ce qui s’en rend l'ennemi. La doctrine matérialiste n’a rien de vis, ni de sensible pour s’étayer. Elle est réduite à crier par-tout : néant, néant ; & elle ne peut porter aucun coup actif à ses adversaires. Elle est même en prise de tous les côtés, & n’a pas la moindre force défensive à opposer. Elle ressemble à ces Dieux de pierre & de bois, qui, selon Baruch , ne pouvoient se défendre, ni des injures de l’air, ni des ordures des insectes ; qui ne pouvoient ni marcher, ni même se soutenir sur leurs pieds, sans être attachés avec des crampons, comme des criminels. 3143 au déluge, vous aviez le pouvoir d’exercer un autre empire ; voilà pourquoi vous avez tant donné d’occupations au peuple choisi. La sagesse vous a laissé subsister , pour que ce peuple élu ne tombât pas dans l’indolence , en attendant que le jour du repos fut arrivé. Ceux qui prétendent aujourd’hui attaquer le trône de l’Eternel, au lieu d’être des géans comme vous , ne sont pas seulement des pigmées., Qu’êtes-vous , vains phantômes de la nuit, quand le soleil s’avance majestueusement sur l’horison, & qu’il verse, à grands flots, sa lumière ? QU e L es celui qui reviendra victorieux du combat ? C'est celui qui s’occupera peu de l'affliction d’être effacé de la mémoire des hommes, & qui se portera tout entier au soin de n’être pas effacé de la mémoire de Dieu. C’est celui qui aura senti, que l’homme est comme le diamant qui ne peut se polir que par ses propres brisures, & par sa poussière. Toute la nature a contribué à former la prison & les entraves de l’homme; il faut que toute la nature travaille à le purifier & à décomposer ses fers. Pourquoi le feu produit - il la dissolution ? Are we not, with regard to it, as in a desert? What are all those lascivious or deceitful discourses, which you adorn with your melody and with all the secrets of your art? I see there still only sounds that likewise await being quickened by the word. But if you had it, this word, where would be the sounds you would use to accompany it? Could your frail instruments unite themselves to its melody? Read here what should compose your concerts. Man had received it, this word; he had been chosen to be the singer of God, and to celebrate all his wonders. He had been chosen to correct every dissonant chord that sought only to disturb the harmony of truth. Was he alone in fulfilling this sublime office? No. All of you, beings of nature, were meant to mingle your sounds with his songs; it was you who were meant to accompany his celestial voice. Let us traverse the harmonic scale that man embraces in his course. At the moment of his fall, he became matter mingled with spirit. At the second law, he became spirit mingled with matter. At the third, he became pure spirit. At the fourth, he shall become deified spirit. I shall hear him, then, one day, this deified man, letting forth from his mouth and from his heart songs

Every religion has a cult and ceremonies, every religious doctrine has visible practices. All have active formulas, to which ideas of power are attached, which command respect, and seem to threaten whoever makes himself their enemy. The materialist doctrine has nothing living, nothing tangible to support itself upon. It is reduced to crying out everywhere: nothingness, nothingness; and it cannot deal any active blow to its adversaries. It is even assailed on every side, and has not the least defensive force to oppose. It resembles those gods of stone and of wood, which, according to Baruch, could defend themselves neither from the injuries of the air, nor from the filth of insects; which could neither walk, nor even hold themselves upright upon their feet, without being fastened with clamps, like criminals. It is he who shall have felt that man is like the diamond, which can only be polished by its own fractures, and by its own dust. All of nature has contributed to forming the prison and the fetters of man; it is fitting that all of nature should labor to purify him and to break apart his chains.
