1I J29 of the strong one, is it not plundered? Have not his weapons adorned the triumph? Wretched man, dost thou not give them back to him every day! Thou hadst two hands, one to free the slave, the other to stop the pursuits of the enemy. Thou hast crossed these two hands, thou art bound in inaction, and thou hast let thyself be led away thyself into slavery. Thou hast done as the children of men do; thou hast daily dug thyself a pit amid the joys of this world. The deeper this pit was, the more thou didst congratulate thyself. Thou didst seek to bury eternity within time. Open thine eyes upon those days of horror and darkness, when the inhabitants of the earth will all have their heads bowed beneath the yoke; when all their limbs will be bound with cords seven times stronger than in the time of the flood. It is in this state that the lightning and the thunder will hurl themselves upon them, that the rivers and the seas will overflow, that the worlds, abandoned to their own weight, will break loose, and, rolling one upon another, will come to crush these cowardly and guilty mortals, who will have no means either of fleeing or of defending themselves. Alas! apart from the human soul, do we not have witnesses enough? Has not Paul 1 announced the coming of the man of iniquity? Have not the evangelists spoken of the horror of the end of the ages? Has not Zachariah told us how impiety will be treated? Has he not shown us the mass of lead cast down into the abyss 1? The law, the prophets, the gospel, the universe, and the heart of man, are so many apocalyptic books.
2330 MAN Rise up with these irrevocable witnesses, if thou wouldst have all these scenes of horror pass, as it were, beneath thy feet. If man does not hold himself, with confidence, at his own degree of elevation, his own law drives him even into the precipices. But instead of the shadows of light, he has nothing left but the shadows of darkness. Everything about him is without connection and without order. It is his senses that render pictures to his spirit; whereas it was his spirit's task to render them to his senses. Happy still, if he does not sink even to the shadows of death! Raise me up from my falls, O Prince of peace! Snatch me from the shadows of time; and preserve me from the vapors of the pit of bitumen. Could it be in regions so shadowy that thy order and thy brightness would make their dwelling? I shall climb the towers of Zion, and from that height I shall contemplate the rich fields of the land of Israel; I shall see, without trouble and without clouds, the wonders the Lord has poured upon the promised land, and which he illumines with his own light. Men of God, help me climb the tower of Zion; when I have reached it, you will return, filled with my love and my gratitude, to render the same service to your other brethren.
3I3I For myself, I shall no longer have need of assistance. I shall be within my natural element. I shall be within the light of the Lord. To what ideas have they reduced themselves, with their systems! They have said that there was no evil upon the earth, and that what appeared, in particular, to be a disorder produced universal order. What, then, is a universal order composed of particular disorders? What is a total good formed by the assemblage of partial evils? What is the well-being of the species, composed of the misfortunes of individuals? Compose, then, likewise a concert of joy out of tears and sighs. Make every species be regenerated and life be produced out of corpses; and if you wish to find the universe beautiful, wait until the hand of time has shaken it even to its foundations, and has turned it into a mass of ruins. They would rather lie to their own judgment and falsify their own reason, than read within themselves their own greatness, and around themselves the sad abuses they have made of it! 5 In vain you defend yourselves against the curb, you 1 do not know how evil came to be, and from that moment you wish to deny its existence. Your judgment is less dear to you than your darkness. 8 You wish it to accept what is so repugnant to it, and you wish it to reject what is merely veiled from it. L . . 1 %
