1123 poseroient tous.

1123 -pose. Disorder and deformity would reign alone over the whole earth. The universe is a soft matter, upon which primal order ceaselessly imprints its seal, and, as it were, the mold of beings; because peace and calm are the final end of nature, just as they are the final end of the essence of man. What is this torrent that descends from the summit of the mountains, that undermines them and sweeps them into the plain? It will spread its level over the whole universe; it will cover with an immense veil every monster that stirs within the abyss, and will submerge every one who has taken part in its disorders. But calm and balance will reign upon the surface of the waters. God avenges himself only by opposing order to disorder; and abomination must be kept far from his gaze. Fill man with thy spirit, that he too may in turn satisfy those who hunger, and that the river of life may cover the whole earth. Lightning pierces, in an instant, even to the abysses, even to the center of the most hidden substances; and thou, wouldst thou not pierce even to the soul of man! Can there be a level within the universe, if there is none within the heart of man; and is not man the keeper of life, of wisdom, and of understanding? Rivers of the earth, cedars of the mountains, and all you animals who fill the world, learn this truth; repeat it ceaselessly, one to another.
2v 124 L’ H 0 M M E Let this harmonious canticle be composed of a single measure, and let it be time itself, in its entirety, that marks it. The universe is the object of life, it was created by life. Man is its organ, he is its administrator within the universe. God alone is its source and its principle, and no being can taste it without him. Bring, all of you, your offerings before man; and this great sanctifier shall present them to our God, as to the sole principle of life. WHY is man here below filled with hope? It is because he lives within the bonds of love. So everything would be gentle in the life of man, were it not for the forced means he ceaselessly employs to arrive at happiness. But when the bonds of earthly life come to break, the bonds of love suspend themselves, to let him undergo a still greater trial. Bonds of love, if you break then, those of hope break too; for hope is the daughter of love. A man sails peacefully upon a river, his skiff breaks apart, and he is plunged into the waters; the security he once enjoyed abandons him. In the midst of his terror he sinks, until, striking the bottom of the water, he is carried back, by the shock, to the surface. Such is the effect of the breaking of our earthly bonds; such is how hope is stolen from us. Do we know the depth of the waters? Do we know whether, in descending into them, we shall not encounter
3125 brambles that tear us, rocks that shatter us, or ravenous fish that devour us? Woe to those who fall into bottomless waters, or so deep that they cannot return to the surface until they have entirely lost their life! But when this sailor rises alive again to the surface, hope is reborn within him, and he musters his strength to reach the shore. Man, enlarge thy soul, and the waters will not overwhelm thee; from the midst of the torrent, thou shalt be able to drink upon thy way. Thy eyes shall see the love of thy God, stretching out his arms to thee, upon the banks of the river; thou shalt forget every season of sorrow and of falsehood, and shalt have memory for nothing but virtue and truth. Are not God and his eternity like an abyss, into which every being will be swallowed up, and lose the memory of its illusory and temporal deeds? It is thus that we see every bodily being descend into the general earthly body, and lose there the appearance of its coarse form. Now do you seek life? You believe you will find it in your arts and in the works of your hands. All these objects await it from you, how can you await it from them? If you now had life within you, what need would you have of all these devices to obtain it?
