13 20 L’ H 0 M M E the other in the tomb, and the other on the way to the grave: to teach us that its regenerating power extends to every dwelling of the human family. Man, shudder with shame for thy crime, which had wrought upon thy kind a threefold concentration; for thy hand is pestilential. What dost thou touch upon the earth, that thou dost not ransack and destroy? Is there not justice and rightness everywhere, except in what thou inventest? Who can hope for the aid of every glorification, without undergoing his own purification? and who will undergo his purification without shocks? To purify the air, to destroy the insects, are not stormy winds and tempests needed? The universe is thus in the hand of God, who shakes and stirs it continually, to make every dross and every coarse covering fall away from it. But wisdom teaches us that he stirs it gently, because his ways are gradual and imperceptible, and because he disposes everything through beneficent laws. You, who have studied the stars, and who have surmised that the whole system of the universe moves as one, have been led there by a great idea. If the unity of wisdom presided over its production, how could it not preside as well over its administration and its maintenance? And without this universality of action, in every work of wisdom, could the dawn of the Lord's glorifications ever reach us?
212 1 It is she who comes to nourish the thoughts of man: for if the thoughts of God are creations, the thoughts of man are seeds that wait only for the action of the sun to come to their glorification. Dost thou not know the simplest and the most sublime of figures? and dost thou not know that thou dost occupy its center? Place thy trust there. Study it every day of thy life; but not in the manner of men, for they are the death of that science. Here is what it will tell thee: Of all beings, after God, be the one thou respectest most. The spirit rested upon the waters. But it was God himself who rested upon it. How could man perish? He is the thought of the 1 Lord. How could man perish? Is the thought of God an error, a fleeting illusion? The thoughts of man themselves, when they are true, are they not invincible, like axioms, however little care he takes to turn them to his own profit? Falsehood, falsehood, shall I wait until I am regenerated to combat thee? However unworthy I may be of the gaze of my God, thou art still more unworthy of it than I. I shall remember that I am the thought of the Lord; and by the rights of my being, I shall imprint upon thee
3122 MAN a mark of infamy, that shall make thee the reproach of the nations. Thou wouldst have my soul! Even my mantle shall escape thee. Thou shalt think to seize it, and it shall slip from thy hand. God has made himself my place of rest. How could I neglect to keep the sabbath? So I shall never fall asleep upon my own matter. Each day, before giving myself to sleep, I shall send the enemy back into his abysses. I shall unite to my body the pure elementary actions, I shall unite to my thought the true sources of light. I shall unite to my heart the living springs of virtue, and to my immortal essence the eternal springs of love. It is thus that I shall prepare for myself, at once, the sleep of peace and the awakening of the just, in the joy and the liveliness of the spirit. Because matter, being far beneath me, its dark and insect-like vapors will not trouble the splendor of my atmosphere. Is the convulsive agitation of nature its primary law? Impetuous winds, raise up the waves of the sea, turn its waters into so many wandering mountains; a mighty law opposes your efforts without ceasing, and tends imperiously to restore balance everywhere. If this law ceased to weigh upon bodies, they would all decom-
