1IT is said: tooth for tooth, eye for eye, in the rigors of the material order; why, in the beneficent order of the spirit, should not this truth find an application to our advantage? Give of thy life, if thou wouldst receive life. Give of thy life without reserve, if thou wouldst have life give itself to thee in the fullness of its unity. So long as thou hast to languish in thy desires, or even so long as thou dost pause to contemplate thy enjoyments, life is not yet within thee in the fullness of its unity. When that term shall have come for thee, thou wilt no longer have to calm thy trouble by sacrifices, nor to guard thyself against thy holy satisfactions. The spirit of truth will press upon thee; it will torment thee, it will drive thee into the desert; and thou wilt say to the nations: make straight the ways of the Lord. Celestial powers, earthly powers, universal powers, respect the human soul: the Lord has just renewed his covenant with it, he has bound it to himself by a new treaty of peace. He has opened to it the divine archives; there it has admired all the treasures prepared for the man of peace. There it has contemplated the torches of intelligence, ever lit, and the living springs of love, which never interrupt their course. There it has traversed the books of life, wherein are drawn the laws of the nations. There it has read the history of peoples past, present, and to come.
2L’ H 0 M M E There it has breathed the sweet vapor of the balms daily employed to heal the wounds of mortals. There it has seen the terrible weapons destined to overthrow the enemies of the fatherland. The soul of man can today enter freely into these various storehouses, according to its needs and those of its brethren. Soul of man, ascend to thy God through humility and penitence. These are the roads that lead to love and to light. Thou wilt then descend again, filled with tenderness for thy brethren, and thou wilt come to share with them the treasures of thy God. You open your pecuniary treasures to the poor, but do you think still more of the needs of his spirit than of those of his passing garment? Do you desire, by these aids, that he should recover a part of his liberty and of his activity, which are taken from him by his poverty? Do you desire that he should recover, through this liberty, the means of praising more readily and more constantly his God, and of enriching himself through prayer? Behold the true purpose of almsgiving; behold how almsgiving can advance the work of God. God is spirit; he wills that all you do be made spiritual. If, in giving your alms, you content yourselves with telling the poor man to pray for you, you ask of him more than you give him; you think more of yourselves than of him: *
3Ah, and yet he is less free than you to give himself to prayer. Spiritualize your works if you wish them to be in every respect according to justice. Interpreters of mythology, why do you say that it veiled only the course of the stars, and the laws of material and corruptible nature? What proportion would there be, then, between the figure and the thing figured? Is not allegory useless when it is superior to its object? Does it not then cease to be allegory? Yes, then it is power, and it acts with open force. Even if you had risen to the active principles of nature, whose knowledge and use must remain unknown to the common herd! But a new obstacle arises: mythology and physics would be at odds. Mythology, to be admissible, ought at least to rest upon the active principles of nature; and physics wants none of these principles, and wills to form everything by aggregates. Whereas, if there is but one unity, by what means would one arrive at aggregating it? Mythology, physics, you will never be able to reconcile yourselves except by each abandoning your own system, and by rising together to a simpler degree, where each of you would find the key to your temple. When you shall have found it, use it still with
