1Et toi, souverain des êtres, quels obstacles pour- roient t’empêcher d’atteindre jusqu'à l’homme ? L'espace & le temps ne sont point des barrières pour ta puissance. Donne issue au moindre de tes desirs , & dès l’instant je ferai environné & comme ébloui de ta présence. Si c’est à ton nom que tout ce qui existe est suspendu, laisserois - tu tomber mon âme dans l'abandon , comme ne pouvant pas la soulever & la soutenir au-dessus des précipices ? L’E S P RIT de l’homme est - il affoibli, est - il plus contenu, ou opère-1-il dans des régions plus invisibles qu’autrefois ? Il semble n’avoir pas même la force de commettre des crimes importans. Les anciens peuples étoient horriblement corrompus ; leur force s’étendoit depuis les enfers jusqu'aux. cieux. Aussi les puissances célestes se mettoient en mouvement. Dieu agitoit les racines & les colonnes de la nature. Il ordonnoit aux eaux de couvrir la face de la terre. Il mettoit à découvert les fondemens du monde. Quand les pouvoirs criminels des peuples ont commencé à s’affoiblir, les vengeances célestes se sont également appaisées. Les menaces ont pris la place de ces vengeances, & les prophètes ont été chargés d’effrayer les nations.
2L‘ H O M M E L’étoile de Jacob est venue ensuite apporter la paix aux hommes & leur annoncer leur délivrance. Elle n’est point venue avec les menaces & les paroles effrayantes des prophètes. Elle est venue annoncer que fan joug était doux, & que les hommes y trouveraient le repos de leur âme. Depuis cette époque du salut des peuples , tout est - il épuisé ? Dieu ne se manifeste plus authentiquement, ni par des vengeances, ni par des menaces, ni par des consolations. La postérité humaine semble abandonnée à elle - même. Non. Les mesures se comblent dans le sommeil & dans le silence. Elles se développeront dans la douleur. Vous entendre^ parler de guerres & de bruits de guerres. Que sont nos guerres humaines & politiques dont l'histoire est remplie , & auxquelles nous voulons si directement appliquer le coup d’œil de la justice & la main du Dieu des armées ? Vous verrez renaître les guerres du peuple choisi contre les Amorrhéens , les Amalécites, les Philistins. Vous verrez renaître les temps des sacrificateurs de Baal; la fin ressemblera au commencement. Mais l’épée de la justice se réveillera. Elle sera encore de plus grands ravages que dans les temps de ces peuples , parce que c’est le Verbe du Seigneur lui - même qui l’aiguisera & qui la sera marcher contre les impies. De l’état de nullité où sont les peuples, ils passeront à l'activité sausse, parce qu’elle est la plus voisine du néant.
3H 113 néant. Ce n’est qu’après ces effroyables révolutions qu’ils recouvreront l'activité régulière. Juifs , vous attendez votre rétablissement dans la Jérusalem terrestre. Vos prophéties ne sont-elles pas accomplies par votre retour de Babylone ? Juifs , vous attendez votre délivrance : mais vous n’êtes point dans la servitude, comme vous l’avez été en Egypte & en Assyrie ; vous êtes plutôt dans le délaissement. Juifs, vous attendez le règne glorieux & temporel du Réparateur ; ne l’auroit - il pas déjà assis parmi vous ce règne temporel & glorieux , si vous aviez voulu le reconnoître ? Tout n'est-il pas consommé ? Et pouvoit - il offrir ici- bas un plus beau triomphe, que de poser la couronne sur le nom sacré qui devoit dissoudre l’iniquité ? Il est esprit. Son règne glorieux est toujours prêt pour ceux qui le servent en esprit & en vérité. Le règne glorieux à venir sera celui des récompenses , pour ceux qui n’auront point été précipités par le règne glorieux du jugement. 6s. 1And thou, sovereign of beings, what obstacles could ever prevent thee from reaching even unto man? Space and time are no barriers to thy power. Give but the least of thy desires an outlet, and from that instant I shall be surrounded and, as it were, dazzled by thy presence. If it is upon thy name that all that exists depends, wouldst thou let my soul fall into abandonment, as though unable to raise it up and sustain it above the precipices? Is the SPIRIT of man weakened, is it more restrained, or does it 1 work in regions more invisible than before? It seems no longer even to have the strength to commit great crimes. The ancient peoples were horribly corrupt; their power reached from the depths of hell even to the heavens. So the celestial powers set themselves in motion. God shook the roots and the pillars of nature. He commanded the waters to cover the face of the earth. He laid bare the foundations of the world. As the criminal powers of nations began to weaken, the celestial vengeances likewise grew calmer. Threats took the place of these vengeances, and the prophets were charged with striking fear into the nations.
2MAN The star of Jacob then came to bring peace to men and to announce their deliverance to them. It did not come with the threats and the frightening words of the prophets. It came to announce that its yoke was sweet, and that men would find in it the rest of their souls. Since that age of the salvation of nations, is everything exhausted? Does God no longer manifest himself authentically, either through vengeances, or through threats, or through consolations? Human posterity seems abandoned to itself. No. The measures fill up in sleep and in silence. They will unfold in sorrow. You will hear tell of wars and rumors of wars. What are our human and political wars, of which history is full, and to which we so directly wish to apply the eye of justice and the hand of the God of hosts? You will see the wars of the chosen people against the Amorites, the Amalekites, the Philistines, revived. You will see the times of the priests of Baal revived; the end shall resemble the beginning. But the sword of justice will awaken. It will work still greater havoc than in the times of those peoples, because it is the Word of the Lord himself who will sharpen it and set it marching against the ungodly. From the state of nullity in which the nations lie, they will pass into false activity, because that is the state nearest to nothingness.
3H 113 nothingness. It is only after these frightful revolutions that they will recover regular activity. Jews, you await your restoration in the earthly Jerusalem. Are not your prophecies fulfilled by your return from Babylon? Jews, you await your deliverance: but you are not in servitude, as you once were in Egypt and in Assyria; you are, rather, in abandonment. Jews, you await the glorious and temporal reign of the Restorer; has he not, perhaps, already established that temporal and glorious reign among you, had you but been willing to recognize it? Is not everything already accomplished? And could he have offered, here below, a more beautiful triumph, than to set the crown upon the sacred name that was to dissolve iniquity? He is spirit. His glorious reign is always ready for those who serve him in spirit and in truth. The glorious reign to come will be that of rewards, for those who shall not have been cast down by the glorious reign of judgment. 6s. Happy, happy art thou, that thou hast reserved thy light and thy wisdom for another dwelling! The more thou wouldst have shared with us here below, the more we would have abused it.
