196 MAN alone and without the happiness of her children? If they are another self to her, how could she separate their happiness from her own? Is it from self-love that you find yourselves disposed to do good to your fellow men, and to make them happy? Do you not feel that they are a portion of yourself, and that love inwardly demands its own balance? Supreme truth, never let them lose sight of this idea, whereby thy relations with them are painted in such vivid strokes within the heart of man. True love of oneself is love of all. Love of all is a celestial love. And this is how thou hast painted in them the character of thy unity, which embraces and cherishes every being. Behold one more proof of how thou hast made man in thine image and in thy likeness. Mortals, what has God done to you, then, to make you declare yourselves his enemies? Funeral torches are today the only lights that guide you, your steps resemble a funeral procession; and it is in this state of death that you take up the brush and call yourselves the painters of truth. You do not enter the Sanctuary of the spirit as the ancients sages did, because you no longer revere, as they did, nature and the practice of virtue. And yet you judge the spirit, as though you knew nature, and you follow it in none of its laws. You do not enter the sanctuary of God as
2the ancient sages did, because you no longer revere the spirit as they did, and it was the spirit's task to lead you in. And yet you judge God, as though you had the spirit, and you keep that spirit far from all your speculations. Through what tribulations and what anguish must the human soul be tormented, until it has dissolved evil and the bitter fruits of ignorance! Had there not come a man who alone could say, I am no longer of the world, what would have become of human posterity? It had fallen into darkness. Nothing bound it any longer to its native land; it was separated forever from its homeland. But if men separate themselves from love, can love separate itself from them? A flash of lightning went forth from the east; it came to touch the earth, and showed us the cloud opened. Do you perceive the vivid glow it makes shine around you? What is that smell of bitumen and sulfur that kills the insects? A rain filled with salt spreads over the earth and makes every plant flourish there. Life comes from the east; that is why it is the name taken by him who wished to give us life. From the depths of my darkness I shall still perceive the light. I shall open my understanding to him who is upon the earth, G
3MAN and who is no longer of the world. Though upon the earth, I shall cease, as he did, to be of the world, and I shall ascend with him into the heavens. It is in the region of life and of light that the support and the restorer of mankind resides. At the time of his resurrection, the Jews did not find him, because they sought him among the dead. One must be raised, as he was, from among the dead, in order to know him, and to no longer wish to be separated from him. Oh, how little his plans have been fulfilled! One had only to never depart, as he did, from the higher sense, for his work to reach its completion. Human posterity, was this path too sublime for thee? It was no more so than thy destination and thy origin. He had brought a path of grace and of merit; they made of it a path of rigor and of sin: he had brought a living path; it became a dead and murderous path, once it was confined within books. The path of rigor and of sin was the path of Moses; and indeed it was only the path of the representatives: and yet, had it not been neglected, how much suffering it would have spared the Restorer! The path of merit and of freedom was the divine path itself, because our God can bring nothing else; and so, had it been followed according to his plans, how simple the work of the end of the ages would have become! And they would still doubt the divinity of the Restorer! And those who say they do not doubt it, are
