1My God is greater than you; my God is all. Where shall I find another being who would be as sweet to me as my God? I shall say to impiety: Wouldst thou still try to establish thy reign in my spirit, at the expense of him who makes himself felt within me? How could I blaspheme against the exclusive and generative source of life? To deny this Being, would I not have to employ the very organ of voice and speech that he himself gave me? And to deny him thus, would that not be to prove him? I shall say to matter: Cease to seduce my eyes with the image of a feigned reality. The more thou dost act, the more thou dost divide thyself, until this division leads thee to nothingness. The spirit, on the contrary, the more it grows and rises, the more it simplifies itself; and its region knows neither division nor difference. Pure joy, divine joy, you will not be sterile within me. Too full of you to contain you, I wish that everything that exists should bear witness to it. Like the sacred lyre that the Eternal has chosen, throughout all time, to express his melodious canticles, I shall sing the presence of my God, the glory of my God, and his ineffable wisdom. The Heavens will lend me their harmonies, the universe will rejoice that one more man unites himself to the concerts of his God, and the abyss will tremble that it cannot disturb their harmony. —
261 HAPPY are the souls that humble themselves before the truth, and who bear in peace the slowness of the healing dew! Dost thou believe thou canst heal thy wound through impatience? and in removing the dressing too soon, wilt thou not make it fester the more? Groan, pray, and wait. Behold how far the stars are above the earth; the throne of the Eternal is so far beyond those spheres, that thou hast no number left to express its elevation. It is there that the beneficent waters are born, which alone can fertilize thy earthly dwelling. There they are pure, subtle, imperceptible to the senses of human thought. As they descend, they lose nothing of their life-giving qualities; but they condense themselves, to adapt to our nature. Their last degree of condensation is still so limpid, that the eye of man could not bear its brightness, had he not attained his strength and his maturity. So long as he is deprived of this living and creative air, as the child in his mother's womb is deprived of the natural air, all his faculties remain inactive. Behold the life that penetrates him! See his soul breathe in and breathe out life. See him enter into relation with his primal atmosphere, and begin with it that commerce which will never cease, unlike the life of his body, and the ebb and flow of nature, which must one day cease.
3No, mortals, no privileged beings, it will not cease for you: but can it not still have interruptions? After having known the celestial joys, can you not descend even to the mire of the lake of death? Can you not fall prey to the illusions of that deceiving being who ceaselessly whispers to men plans beyond their means, so that they may be covered with shame and humiliation? Wisdom, Wisdom, thou dost sometimes shake man with a powerful arm; thou dost raise him to the supreme regions, thou dost plunge him into the abyss. Thou dost make him feel, now the ice of the north, now the devouring heat of the south, so that he may know that thou alone art the Lord, and so that he may neither glory nor grow discouraged. Hope and humility, these are the elements from which thou wilt compose within him divine charity, that virtue which will be his sole title to be admitted into the abode of peace, of enjoyment, and of love. My own joy is, as it were, assured, from the moment I have been touched by zeal for the house of the Lord. My joy is assured, from the moment I weep, and am as though I had been baptized for the dead. Who will prevent me from carrying to the tomb the consoling thought that the Lord has given me of himself? Alas! the soul of man is a sieve that was meant
