148 MAN for those who do not rise up even to the great light! Let us take no rest until we have prepared the ways of the Lord, and until we have covered the streets of Jerusalem with flowers and with branches of trees. It is from the summit of the celestial regions that our being was cast down. The name of the Lord has followed us. But how much time is needed for this sacred root to rise with us even to its own powers! Enter into the course of truth, the enemy will tempt you first through discouragement, then through the appearance of your successes and through gleams of life, which you mistake for life itself. But at least, if the impure can take on human form, it cannot take on the substance of that form, for then it would be delivered. The pure, on the contrary, can take on both the appearance and the substance of human form, and yet still hold always to the region of life, since it comes to give that life to us. Remember Azarias; remember the Savior, before and after his resurrection. Remember, further, his ascension, and you will know the three degrees of the man of desire. Man, tremble with fear during thy course of death and corruption, and watch ceaselessly against the enfeeblement of the spirit. But remember that the enemy knows only what is shown to him. When the Savior still acted only as spirit, the enemy
2D was deceived in this, and dared to converse with him, dared to tempt him. From the time the Savior had unfolded his character, and, following his forty days of prayer, the celestial Angels had come to serve him, the enemy knew him upon the earth only through the medium of human souls in which he had established his dwelling of corruption. It was only by this means that he acknowledged his divinity, because the soul of man is the true intermediary of it, and because without this intermediary the iniquity of the enemy would have been too far removed from the ineffable Divinity. So it was only in these circumstances that the Savior imposed silence upon him, that holiness might not be sullied by his impure mouth. When the wound had formed, a ray spread forth, and each portion of that ray partakes of life according to its measure. It is by dividing his love that man descended into crime and into darkness. But thou, O Eternal! it is by multiplying thy love and the means of uniting thyself to man, that thou dost succeed in delivering him, without compromising thy holy sublimity. Was not earthly time established by wisdom, to kill within us that solitary worm which devours all our nourishment?
350 MAN Human posterity, why do you seem to act as though you were separated and abandoned to your own action alone 4? Without salt the agents from outside would have too much hold; without oil, the salt would corrode you: it is for this that the one and the other belong to the outer covering and preserve you. And besides, does not childhood announce itself by rightness of judgment and a lively sense of justice? If this tender plant were better cultivated, would not youth carry out for it the full exercise of this virtue? Would not mature age be that of vast and profound knowledge? Old age that of indulgence and love? Alas, in what order it follows these progressions! What resources, then, will man have, if even time itself is given to him in vain? Time was the gentle way; there will remain to him only the way of rigor, or the way without time. Come forth from this torpor which would end by turning your whole being into a sepulcher. Spring toward the light without even dwelling on the setbacks that beset you. There is a time for sorrow. But once the fire of the spirit is kindled, one must think only of not letting it go out. The principle of temporal life is gentle, like the childhood of man. The principle of spiritual life is gentle, like truth. But to know and feel the sweetness of the principle of divine life, one must be raised up from time.
