145 If this spirit is not penetrating, it will at first see the two pans of the scale only as level. Such was the measure of the Manicheans. But let it press on, and it will soon see which of the two weights must prevail. It will see, moreover, that a necessary and necessarily eternal hand sustains the balance and holds it suspended; and that it is there alone that the true source of power and of the social laws is found. It will see that a supreme power, in suspending this balance, leaves a free movement to its two pans. But who will understand these truths, if he does not rise to the very center of man's thought? Oh man, how long wilt thou remain bowed beneath the weight of thy errors and thy hasty judgments! When will thy soul come to know the sorrows of the man of desire, and learn thereby to judge its own illusions and its dreadful self-assurance! You speak; and edifices are raised for you? You speak; and your armies assemble and overthrow your enemies? You speak; and the sciences and the knowledge pass into the minds of those who listen to you. You speak; and the wounds and the sufferings of the sick are healed, the passions are calmed and give way, in the heart of man, to the light of truth? You speak; and your alliances are formed, and you secure
2MAN for your generations all the rights and all the honors they can expect. Your word is a mover of absolute necessity, and the works man performs in the whole universe can be, and can only be, the fruit of your word. There is but one law; if a word had not acted, how then would the edifice of the world have received its being? If a word had not acted, how would man have felt his sublime destiny? What difficulty is there that the same word should act again to offer him consolations amid his abysses, and to help him come forth from them? From the moment he exists, the word is always upon him; it does but vary its language and its modulations. Mortals, you cannot believe in the word that sustains all things, and yet you are forced to believe in the word that created all things. Know that it was necessary to cross the ninefold appearance by thought, in order to read its generation. Has it not, as it were, annihilated itself in descending below that number? But could it lose its titles? and you yourselves, have you lost yours by plunging into the precipice? The word is eternal, because it is life: seek life, you will feel it, you will taste it; you will be assured that it exists by itself. If you succeed in feeling life, you will no more ask an account of what it is, than you ask one of what it is that constitutes a joy for your soul and an axiom for your mind.
3You will feel that life and the word exist by themselves, and that they cannot not be. The axioms you know, can they perish, can they be altered? Do they not seem eternal to you? And yet they are but the corollaries of a single and supreme axiom; thus your mind can measure justice itself, and your heart can taste life. Human reason, fatal instrument that we abuse, serve then to bring man closer to life, after having served so much to lead him away from it! It has become, this reason, like a precipice in the midst of a fertile plain. It is only by fleeing it that the traveler can walk with a firm step and not be dashed to pieces in his fall. Will you pray to God and ask him for his gifts and his favors before having purified yourselves, and having established every virtue within you? That would be to propose that he prostitute himself. To whom do the sovereigns of the earth give places and offices? To those who are deemed, by their labors and their zeal, to have made themselves capable of them. Do not mistake, either, for orders from on High, or for a reward, that which is only the fruit of the Spirit's great tolerance. Ah! my brethren, if man knew his own influence, you would see how dark the path of life is
