Un homme a été envoyé en témoignage pour attester l’empire de la vérité sur l’erreur, & de la réalité sur le néant. Il est devenu un homme de douleur, ne trouvant nulle part où reposer la tête de son intelligence. Dieu avoit dit : je rassemblerai les dispersions d’Israël. S’il s’unit à l’amour dès ce monde, s’il y prend Dieu pour son unique maître, & l'ame de l’homme pour son épouse la plus chérie , il deviendra impeccable au règne à venir. Gloire primitive de l’homme, tu devois croître, & tu as été en diminuant. Les lois temporelles de l’esprit sont venues à son secours dans le degré d’infériorité où il étoit descendu ; Et elles doivent le ramener à cette ligne de croissance infinie qui lui étoit destinée par son origine. Les agens purs de la nature hériteront de nos substances élémentaires. Les hommes de bien dans tous les âges hériteront de nos salutaires influences. Les siècles hériteront de notre mémoire. Yes, yes, the Lord sometimes plunges the universe into the abyss, but he does not wish to leave it there forever. From the height of his throne, he hears the cries of the Hebrews in the land of Egypt. These cries bring down his own name, that name which had not even been given to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. X Because the more extreme our afflictions are, the more the beneficent author of our life hastens to send us effective aid. A man was sent as a witness to attest the empire of truth over error, and of reality over nothingness. He became a man of sorrows, finding nowhere to rest the head of his understanding. God had said: I will gather together the scattered of Israel. They said: let us divide the congregations of Israel. A branch fell from the tree. The senseless gathered it up. 2The powers of time hew the stones for the future edifice. They prepare the metals to adorn the temple of the Eternal; they cast them into the furnace, that they may be purified there of their dross. It is the most ductile and the gentlest men who are made to suffer the most. Like gold, they can be drawn through the narrowest die without breaking. Brittle metals do not withstand this test. What could ever detach man from the Divinity, once he holds to it by love and by suffering? The gate of love has been opened, man has two paths today. Formerly he had but one, that of his own name, as does the wicked man still. If he unites himself to love even in this world, if he takes God for his sole master, and the soul of man for his most cherished spouse, he will become impeccable in the kingdom to come. Primal glory of man, thou wast meant to grow, and thou hast instead diminished. The temporal laws of the spirit have come to his aid in the degree of inferiority into which he had fallen; and they must bring him back to that line of infinite growth which was destined for him from his origin. Has not the garment of charity been spread over the wound, to cover it? Has not the balm penetrated it, to heal it? But since thy spirit and thy love fill the whole earth, it is equally true that thou canst not hide thyself from the eyes of the man who desires thee and who seeks thee. Man of desire, let not thy trust be shaken any longer by the injustices of thy fellow men. LET us take care that, at our final hour, none but our lawful heirs shall have any share in our spoils. Here is how our inheritance shall be distributed. The pure agents of nature shall inherit our elemental substances. Men of good in every age shall inherit our salutary influences.
