1C OF DESIRE. 33 But by what weapons did he conquer the enemy? By what answers did he silence the tempter? It was by three passages drawn from the scriptures: and would the scriptures still seem unworthy of your attention! As impetuous as the unchained north winds, as ardent as the fires of Etna, as persevering as the movement of the stars: such must be the prayer of man; it must know rest and interruption no more than eternity knows time and its intervals. I will imitate Jacob, I will not leave thee until the Angel has blessed me. My soul languishes for thee. Bless me with the earthly blessing. Bless me with the heavenly blessing. Bless me with the divine blessing. Bless me with the blessing of the sanctuary. Bless me with the blessing of strength, of understanding, and of love. And I will celebrate the immensity of thy mercy and of thy power, and I will humble thy enemies! God will give me a pledge of this covenant; and this pledge will never leave me. He will set faithful guards over my whole person; my body, my soul, and my spirit, will be kept by the sentinels of the Lord. My word has leapt forth toward my God, it has risen toward his seat, it has struck the springs of life. C
224 L’ H 0 M M E I feel them descending within me. They seek everywhere within me for that which belongs to them. They are life. All that lives within me is their own possession. They are peace, joy, felicity: how could all not end in canticles! Moses, Deborah, Zachariah, all the Saints of God completed their works with acts of thanksgiving to the Eternal. The end of the work will be a universal concert. Canticles are unceasing in the higher region. Is it in the very bosom of life that drowsiness can make itself known? Israel, thou wast chosen to be the singer of the earth. Never interrupt thy concerts, and let the earth languish no more in slumber. What employment can be compared to that of being baptized for the dead? To wash continually, through our sufferings, the stains that men have made upon themselves, those they are making, and those they shall make, and to bear all the frightful sorrows that follow from them? Wherever that man goes, whatever he does, his work pursues him, and the bitterness of the cup ferments within him. He is occupied, he is tormented, only by the desire for the healing of the great wound. Oh, God of peace, if among my brethren there are some who act as though not remembering thee, act not
3. 35 toward them as toward those thou dost no longer remember. Is not the zeal of the house of the Lord bound up with the love of man? Is not man the object of the work and the love of the Lord? Thou hadst promised Israel to give peoples and kingdoms for its sake; but thou hast given still more for the peoples and the kingdoms, since thou hast given thyself for them. The Lord is an infinite progression of mysteries. 11 has brightness and lights for every age. He gave us, in the first solid, a material proof that his name abides upon the earth. He showed us by this the universal activity of his powers, and how his action fills every region and every degree of time. He taught us that, in his image, we must fill the universe with his distributive justice, even unto the places where injustice has taken root. Such is the burden that the man of sorrows must carry; he must even take up the burden of his brethren, when cowardice holds them back. He must carry this crushing weight through the rough paths of time, through the brambles and the thorns, despite the hail and the frost, unto the place of his destination. An action that comes to nothing, thou canst no doubt disturb the harmony. How much more must a false or blameworthy action disturb it! Nothing is lost: must not the harvest one day be C 2
