1MAN made manifest, and your crimes bring forth, into the light, the fruits they are sowing today in the shadows? Not to shudder at the future state, one would need to have its measure. But how could the present state serve us as a base? See whether the circular line is not at least neutral with respect to spirituality, since it is either of form, or evil? And learn whence come the sorrows of the prophets, and the sufferings by which the great wound holds all beings. 2 I. O you, who sit upon thrones of light, why do men find so much difficulty in reconciling their systems? Is it not so that they may all be obliged to bend beneath the divine yoke, and to acknowledge the one sovereign of beings as the only wise one and the only master. When will you extend to me a helping hand, to set me at your feet, upon the steps of your throne! From that point of elevation, I would contemplate, with the eye of understanding, the wonders of every universe. I would feel vividly and steadily in my heart that immortal goad of divine life, which ought to rule and sanctify my whole being! Through you I would partake of that unity which alone can reconcile all mortals. So long as the serpent keeps its skin hardened by the cold of winter, can it receive the benign influences
2C 3 of spring? and how does it obtain that new skin which life is about to penetrate? It is by rubbing itself painfully against the thorns, by passing through the dense and prickly brambles, that it strips off its old skin, and becomes smooth and agile as in the first days of its youth. All the violence of the enemy is like the sieve in which the grain is sorted and separated. All the thorns it lets me feel will detach, with each rubbing, a fold of my old garment. Then they will trace upon me the signs of our co-eternal covenant; they will clasp my hand, they will clasp the hand of my soul in witness of our union; they will have orders to seal it with the sacred seal. Natural reason, prudent observation, you can enlighten us as to our primal state. Regeneration alone, and the renewal of our whole being, can make us feel it. What, indeed, is the object of the two laws? Does it not come down to restoring to us the purity of the secondary state? So you all, elect of the Lord, have occupied yourselves with this work, and have taught us little of the first state. The sacred traditions ought to have been filled with the facts of the Spirit, and not with the speculations of the Intelligence. Oh world, oh world, why wast thou not worthy that he should reveal himself before the disciples of Emmaus! What wonders he could have taught them, since at the very moment he was speaking to them, he was already no longer in the abode of death!
3L’ H 0 M M E Does a mother lose sight of the son she punishes for the slight faults of his childhood? She sends him a few steps away from her, she prescribes for him a boundary within her own sight, and in the same place where she dwells. It is thus that God deals with guilty man. Child, if only thou knewest thy mother's heart! It is not the cries of anger that will move her. She waits for thee to utter those of friendship and repentance. She even sends secretly toward thee faithful friends, who seem, without her knowledge, to suggest to thee that thou implore her mercy. Thou followest this salutary counsel! Come, beloved child, there is no longer any barrier for thee, there is no longer any distance between us, and we can embrace one another. God of peace, thou awaitest, like this tender mother, nothing but the humility of man's heart, and the return of his gaze toward thee, to draw him from his captivity. He no longer dares call thee his father, because he has forfeited that right through his offenses and his stains. But thou still callest him thy son, because thou forgivest him, and no longer rememberest his crimes. And the spirit of man believes itself abandoned when it is punished! It believes itself in nothingness when it is no longer in the abundance of life! As though love did not accompany justice everywhere! As though the mere sovereigns of the earth did not themselves
