1402 0 MAN DOUBT no longer the power of the word; you form yourselves within no science, within no language, except through the frequent use of the word. How many people have spent their lives reading, studying alone, and have remained beneath the object they were studying, for want of discussing it? What, then, would we not attain, if we exercised ourselves in the word of holy and sacred love, which is the complement and the sum of every perfection and of every joy! With that love nothing more is necessary for us upon the earth, because it contains everything, because it is everything, and because it teaches everything. This is why we are always in relation with God, because he is universal love. If we rise, we find that supreme love, which is the element of the infinite. If we do not have the strength to hold ourselves within that region, and descend, we still find love, because it descends with us. We find that love even within our wanderings, and within the ills that follow from them, because it fills everything, and cannot abandon us. We are, then, always in relation with God, according to our degrees and according to our measures. Alas! we are never in measure with the
2Ce a 403 men, because they communicate only through the spirit, and not through love. Thus they are among themselves like those women of whom Paul spoke to Timothy, and of whom he said: that they are ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. They take a point of light for the sun, and each wishes to give it to his fellow as an exclusive and universal light. Unhappy that we are! let us never forget that we live here below within a composite region, and not within the region of unity. We shall then begin to understand one another. The brush of evil has spread itself over the earth in a vast and broad manner. Happy are we, when here below we are only within shadows and within darkness! If we take one step further, it is almost always to walk within iniquity. Can our spirit not occupy five degrees, with regard to matter? Within the first, and the most elevated of all, it does not perceive that matter exists. Within the second it perceives it; but it grieves to see how deformed it is, and how prejudicial the reign of the senses is to the reign of the spirit. Within the third, it finds itself level with it; it attaches itself to it, it finds its pleasure there. But it is a
340 4 MAN pleasure that deceives it, because its nature calls it to pleasures of another kind. Within the fourth, it becomes a slave to matter and to its senses, and finds there more chains than pleasures; because matter is an imperious master that relaxes nothing of its rights. Within the fifth, it finds nothing but remorse, sufferings, torments, and despair; because that is the ultimate fruit and the final term, to which matter leads him who has made himself like unto it. These are no longer pleasures; this is no longer servitude: it is the gathering together of every horror of privation and of the whole harshness of sorrow. Follow the reverse course, and thou shalt see that the eternal order, the further it advances, the more it manifests its truth and its justice. Wisdom has bound every affinity through contiguous resemblances, so that our path might be made through a way gentle and, as it were, imperceptible. This is why death would be so consoling, had we in advance regarded this present world as a preparatory resemblance to another, higher and more instructive resemblance. For resemblances must always grow in importance and in interest, since each resemblance is a model with regard to the one that precedes it, though it is but an image with regard to the one that follows it. Is not everything a symbol within the physical region we inhabit? and the natural character of bodies
